Last week, Minneapolis officials confirmed they were considering a fairly rare course of action: disbanding the city police department.
It's not the first locale to break up a department, but no cities as populous have ever attempted it. Minneapolis city council members haven't specified what or who will replace it if the department disbands.

Before its police reforms, Camden was routinely named one of the most violent cities in the US.
Now, seven years after the old department was booted, the city's crime has dropped by close to half. Officers host outdoor parties for residents and knock on doors to introduce themselves. It's a radically different Camden than it was even a decade ago. Here's how they did it.

(35,389 posts)change. When people hear defund or eliminate cops they hear crime will run rampant there are no police. Saying we defund or eliminate the police just gives the Republicans the issue they will win on. That's the problem the Democrats always give the Republicans an issue they can knock down in one sentence. Now for the next 5 months that is what I will hear the Democrats want to eliminate the police and take our guns.

(81 posts)Quickest and easiest way to provide a win to the Republicans is have political figures pass a disband/defund litmus test. I heard that crap and nearly fell out of my chair. While well-intentioned, but not very well thought out. Really if you removed the political implications, it's still a terrible idea.

(4,429 posts)want (I posted a thread earlier this morning, based on what one activist said during a PBS interview last night). She wants the police defunded and essentially disbanded.
I live in a very liberal town with a drug problem. We have a very engaged police force. They work as best they can and are very supportive to those with problems.
The idea of defunding the police completely is very hip with the younger people in town.
It scares me!
