‘Cops,’ Long-Running Reality Show That Glorified Police, Is Canceled

“Cops” is no longer.

<snip>

Spike TV, the predecessor to the Paramount Network, picked up “Cops” in 2013 after the show was canceled by Fox, its network home for 25 years. The show’s 33rd season was expected to premiere on Paramount on June 15.

<snip>

The civil rights group Color of Change began a campaign in 2013 urging Fox not to renew the unscripted law-enforcement show and called on advertisers to withdraw support. Since “Cops” made its debut in 1989, the group said, the network, the show’s producers and the advertisers “have built a profit model around distorted and dehumanizing portrayals of black Americans and the criminal justice system.”

The organization argued that although “Cops” was marketed as unbiased, the show “offers a highly filtered version of crime and the criminal justice system — a ‘reality’ where the police are always competent, crime-solving heroes and where the bad boys always get caught.”

<snip>

He added, “These cop reality shows that glorify police but will never show the deep level of police violence are not reality, they are P.R. arms for law enforcement. Law enforcement doesn’t need P.R. They need accountability in this country.”

<snip>

About time. The show taught me one important thing: cops need to have 'police' printed on their jackets to tell that they weren't the criminals. What a crap show.

in the US. Local news, advertisements, etc are all money makers for capitalists to profit off of peoples' fear of the unknown. We do not actually have all the violence and crime that these propaganda for profit shows portray as reality to America. Oh...got to go and buy a gun, buy some alarms, buy some more, more, more to "feel" safe. Most people are a lot safer than they realize. They have been sold a load of BS for over 50 years. Watch Bowling for Columbine, it was bad in the 80s and is far worse now. We do not need more glorified violence and false reporting so media and corporations can profit off of our unjustified fear.

They go out and fish until they get enough catches for several thirty minute shows. There's no telling how many hours on the lake that may take.

of the lone cop battling an overwhelmed justice system that simply will not let him do his job. From the Lone Ranger to Lone Wolf McQuade to the Untouchables, this sick meme has warped generations of American's minds. All of them reinforce the idea that the end justifies the means, a tenet that is majorly responsible IMO for the current screwed up state of our nation. It is the current guiding ideology of the Republican Party. Anything they can think of doing is okay as long as it is for the greater good in their minds. I contend that it it not and it never will be right.

I'm sick of every single drama at the 10 o'clock at night time slot being another cop show. Enough is enough. There are plenty of other interesting topics and ideas they could be putting in that time slot.

I tried to watch it, but there was something about the way law enforcement officers behaved that made me sick to my stomach. And this is considering the ones filmed for the tv show were on their best behavior. I'm glad this show is gone.

Btw, I was wondering what nt meant.

It means nutty trump right?

ha ha

To the issue at hand.
I have never once watched any of the many cop series on TV. Only Columbo would I watch about the police.

I do want to say, although I am happy for the consciousness-raising over the unfortunate murder of brother Floyd and the protests, I am not AT ALL convinced cops in this country will reform any time soon.

I know there were incidents reported where the cops were doing some good but there were as many reports of cops, in spite of the Floyd incident, we're still playing the police state card.

Btw, I know nt means no text

and somebody else did as well or this show wouldn't have been created.

But this show just purpetuated what white people wanted to see.

This show a a great prop piece for the war on drugs and Prison Inc.

Michael moore did an awesome satire, called "corporate cops" it was only like 30 seconds but it showed what a joke the cops show was.

is live/PD a parallel show ?? never watched it, but we should just get rid of it as well....

Pointed out to my husband that you never saw the cops in upscale neighborhoods. They only hassled poor people.
