I'm not spending any money I can hold on to. If they wanted the extra unemployment money to help stimulate the economy, not reassuring out of work people there will be more coming is having the opposite effect.
We had 99 weeks of bare minimum aid in the last recession, and now this recession is much worse, and they think four months is all they should pay out, in an election year?

to the 20+-million people who are out of work. It’s a matter of how much and for how long.

Ds want to do the right thing: continue the $600-a-week thru the end of the year. That will give millions of people confidence that their financial lifeline will not be yanked away. It will encourage people to spend that money, and that will help the economy.

Rs want to nickel and dime it, because they truly believe anyone on unemployment is a lazy, freeloading loser. It matters not that the only reason they’re on unemployment is because tRump totally fucked up our response to COVID-19. Their solution will be short-term help at a reduced benefit, say, three more months at $300 a week. That will be their negotiating position. That position will give no confidence at all to the unemployed, who will sit on any benefits they do receive in an effort to stretch their money as far as possible.

Rs will then use the fact that the money did not go right back into the economy to cut assistance even deeper.

It’s all so predictable.

The $600 will be extended, but at most through September. The economy has been devastated.

This is something like we haven't faced in our lifetimes economically, will be much worse than 2008.

The poor and working poor will be hit hardest like always, but those groups also have some skills to cope that other workers might not have. Know what your priorities for spending should be, food should be first, but also look for food help. Know the shutoff dates for utilities and how far you can push it. Also, work with utilities, most have programs right now. Work with mortgage companies, they're suspending payments right now. Ditto with car payments. Know your rights with landlords, they can't just throw you out on the street after 1 late payment, they also can't fine you more than a certain amount per day for late payments, know what applies in your state.

Best to come up with a plan and write it down. Know your priorities. I've got friends really struggling right now and they're unsure of what bills to pay and what ones they can push. They had paid a utility bill that they had another 6 weeks to pay and didn't have money left for food.

as a response to tRump’s fuck up, workers should take the entire onus on themselves, pull themselves up by their bootstraps, learn to live on less, skip meals when you can, etc. Be ready to argue on multiple fronts - with your landlord, your bank, your utility companies - because a government that thinks nothing of giving a tax cut of $1.5-trillion to the richest people in the country can’t afford a measly $600 a week for people forced out of work due to tRump’s utter incompetence and Republican complicity in his incompetence.

Nope.

It's not the way it should be, but the way that it is. And people can make decisions that can help their situations.

I too put this 100% on Trump.
