.
A neighborhood in Warren, Michigan expressed shock this week when local police took down a black Amazon driver for merely parking the wrong way on their street.
Fox 2 Detroit reports that witnesses say the Amazon driver was tackled by a police officer shortly after delivering a package to local resident Diana Gouim.
Gouims neighbor, Geri Cheatham, tells Fox 2 Detroit that she didnt understand why the police officer tackled the driver and why he then called for backup.
It was ridiculous for one little kid that was the size of me, she tells the station.
Jim Michaels, another witness on the scene, tells Fox 2 Detroit that many of the neighbors tried to convince the officers that the driver had done nothing wrong.
We, several of the neighbors, spoke with the officer saying the kid hasnt done anything and the cop was like well, He was parked the wrong way,' Michaels recalls.
The Warren Police Department says that the incident is being reviewed, and Police Commissioner Bill Dwyer so far has refused to say why the driver was detained.

Perhaps those police officers homes and offices should be banned from Amazon deliveries.

There are groups like that all over the country, mostly in small towns and rural areas, but also some cities. They like to join police forces and harrass POC. The Guardian did an article on them and PBS did a documentary on FBI warnings about them.

(905 posts)Notice in the video that as multiple cops arrive to ogle over the arrest of a black deliveryman for "parking on the wrong side of the street," a white cop both drives on and parks his motorcycle on the SIDEWALK.
The cop is violating the following Warren City Ordinance: Sec. 37-701 under Article VI, Other Traffic Regulations. Under this law, ALL motor vehicles, "including but not limited to motorbikes and mini-bikes" are prohibited from driving on ANY public property that is not a street, alley, parking lot, or driveway. In other words, NO DRIVING ON SIDEWALKS, DUMBASS!
I think the sidewalk driving should have at least warranted a tackle takedown & cuffing at gunpoint by any one of the many cops standing around, don't you?

Even in those few encounters I've had, I've wanted to tell the cops to go screw themselves. And let's face it - parking a van to allow the driver to step out to a sidewalk and not into traffic on a residential street was done for safety. It never should have been an issue in the first place.

Whether or not a delivery driver can do that, I would never ignore or argue with an officer who stopped me for a plausible reason and wanted to see my license. I cant blame the driver for feeling harassed or believing it was racially motivated.
Blaming the driver without mentioning that the cop had opportunity to deescalate is telling half the story. I warn my kids about cops, but knowing they can be assholes doesnt excuse it.

Your statement that Once the cop starts to reach for you to take you into custody ... That's too late! is an assumption about police behavior that should change.
Were so used to cops not having a duty to deescalate that we reflexively assume thats the case. I think that assumption is one of the things that needs to challenged as we see videos like this even if the victim may be safer not doing that as it occurs.
Theres a similar assumption about police committing assaults or vandalism like stabbing the tires on those parked cars. We ought to be talking about criminal cops when they do those things, not bad cops.
I usually dont fully get language discussions, but the events of the past weeks really cemented the idea that the way we discuss police behavior is wrong and excuses what should be inexcusable.

(1,568 posts)Yeah, the guy probably could have avoided it by just giving into the cop being asshole, but imagine having to do that your entire life. I put the blame on the cop, because he is the one with the power in this situation. He could have gave a helpful tip to the driver that he could get a ticket if he continued parking the wrong way. Instead, he had his delicate little feels hurt because the driver responded with the same tone as he was being spoken to. At which point the cop decided to escalate the encounter for no good reason.
I would have a totally different take on this if the cop informed the driver he can't park that way, and then driver continued to park on the wrong side. Although, I may argue that is over-policing and I would rather people not be ticketed for such things. But I could be wrong on that, and there could be a very good reason why that law exists.
stopdiggin
(11,308 posts)I think even the reason for the stop was a ticky-tacky "dick" move. Chip on his shoulder .. and not taking any back-talk .. all very probably true. LE everywhere should be doing better .. acting better.
In the meantime .. this young man decided to "engage" with a dick cop .. and ended up in a squad facing charges rather than the (expected) warning or parking ticket that would have resulted from presenting a driver's license. I can feel sorry for him. Tell you I think it is unfair and unjust. But I think he made the wrong decision here.

(10,749 posts)And these buffoons choose to do this now?!??
This town must do what other departments are doing. Suspend, investigate, dismiss, charge. And immediately release all prior complaints and discipline taken against these officers. And every single officer in this incident must be treated as if he were the officer who committed the assault, along the lines of the getaway driver for a heist gets charged with the heist and any crimes committed during it.
And I like the idea of firing them as Amazon customers.
And, once more. Any cop fired for cause - whether or not charges are brought - must never be allowed to work as a law enforcement officer anywhere, ever. And if they are found to be working as a law enforcement officer, charges must be brought against the officer and the individual who hired him.
This will require state laws as well as some sort of overriding federal law. I don't know how this can be done, but it must be done.
One more thing. I watched the link and saw that the mayor initially called for the officer's dismissal and charges but walked it back after the police commissioner weighed in. The mayor also said the the actions of one officer should not besmirch the entire department. Maybe he is one "bad apple." I know nothing about Warren, MI. But why should we believe that it's one guy. Why shouldn't this one guy be representative of the entire department - until it's proven otherwise. The police nationwide are perfectly happy to condemn all the demonstrators because of the actions of a relatively few looters. Should work in both directions, no?

So I suspect the only thing that would have happened if he would have "complied" with the request earlier, is he would have just been physically assaulted by the LEO sooner rather than later. This is bullshit, if you want to give him a ticket, be an asshole and give him a ticket, but don't escalate the situation, and if you ask him for his license don't be surprised and "fearing for your safety" when he goes to get it from his pocket you fuckin' idiot!!! And if you are fearing for your safety in this situation - YOU NEED TO GET A DIFFERENT FUCKING JOB, ASSHOLE - THIS ONE IS NOT FOR YOU!!
Give me a fucking break, he is there in an Amazon truck, and just delivered a fucking package, I mean what is the LEO thinking? That it was all part of his brilliant fucking plan, to one day become an employee for Amazon, so he could deliver packages while parking illegally, and his dream could come true and he could finally assault and injure an officer?!?!?!?!?
I know some police, have a couple in the family, I tell them all the time, "Your Co-Workers SUCK!" and I also tell them that if they or other officers are so jumpy that they fear for their safety like a paranoid schizophrenic when people do things like - reach for their license, they need to get the fuck out of that area of employment and go get a job with preferably no social interaction!
Sorry for the redundancy above - I wish I could say Unbelievable, but it is not, sadly it is easily believable and has been common practice for a long time now. Until there is Accountability, System-Wide Accountability - this will not change!

If youre tempted to feel sympathy for me, dont. I used to happily hassle the homeless under other circumstances. I researched obscure penal codes so I could arrest people in homeless encampments for lesser known crimes like remaining too close to railroad property (369i of the California Penal Code). I used to call it planting warrant seeds since I knew they wouldnt make their court dates and we could arrest them again and again for warrant violations.
We used to have informal contests for who could cite or arrest someone for the weirdest law. DUI on a bicycle, non-regulation number of brooms on your tow truck (27700(a)(1) of the California Vehicle Code) shit like that. For me, police work was a logic puzzle for arresting people, regardless of their actual threat to the community. As ashamed as I am to admit it, it needs to be said: stripping people of their freedom felt like a game to me for many years.

The profession needs to be reimagined and modernized so we have a more equitable society.
And, our prison system needs to be abolished, reformed and rebuilt, too. There is no reason why we should have more than two million Americans locked behind bars.

(13,587 posts)around here that the cops look the other way on stuff like that. I had a commercial hydroseeder parked the wrong way on a one way street one day and cop stopped and gave me crap about it. I kind of know the guy and told him I didn't come through the do not enter sign, I backed all the way around the block! He laughed his ass off and took off. I had to be facing that way because our hose reels were on that side. He would have accepted the real excuse too.
But that's a 40ish white guy in Idaho with a white cop. Unfortuantely a totally different situation.
