that doesn’t get repeated nearly often enough. Thanks, Bette.

It’s part of your cherished ‘heritage,’ neoconfederates. Own it.

Where are the statues of the fleeing Jefferson Davis?

They don't want to FORGET this part of their history, right?

If I ever win the lottery, I’ll commission a series of statuary commemorating ‘delicate subjects’ that deplorables of all stripes would rather forget.

it was widely reported in the news, but he was just wearing an overcoat and hood.

However, it is an interesting piece of early propaganda.

Southerners did about as much as Northerners to propogate the false tale because they made Davis a scapegoat for the disaster.

It is interesting how propaganda takes on a life, and is perpetuated.

But you are right, propaganda often becomes "factual" history, like Lee only calling Northern troops "those people" not more derisive terms. That was a myth that made it into Burns' Civil War doc.

But, the press tried to play it off as if he were wearing a hoop skirt, a la Scarlett at the BBQ-

?

I am a Southerner-- can't stand the guy. Have been to his grave (I have a relative buried in Hollywood Cemetery-- trust me, I wasn't there to see Jefferson Davis), and it is weird. People drive up and put little confederate flags all over. Bizarre. Whatever.

The cross dressing aspect of his attempt to escape needs to be told for what it really was, and the propaganda cited for historical purposes.

It's the Southern version of Mount Rushmore. It will be MUCH more difficult to take down.

It's notable for having Jefferson Davis on it. There aren't many statues made of politicians who lost wars.
