Wagon Wheel Flea Market is closing permanently

What was it? 125 acres, 2000 stalls. If you wanted to sell food from your garden or belt buckles or yard sale items or baked goods, used books or handmade crafts or antiques, you could do it on tables or stalls at this giant place. It was unique.

I’m sure lots of people were startups and tiny entrepreneurs trying to eke out an independent living there. Sometimes I think the powers that be have grabbed the country by the shoulders and shaken it like a piggy bank, to get the last coins out.

The thing is, it was a very large space in the middle of rather densely populated Pinellas county that had been there for over fifty years. Pinellas county land can sell for $500K+ to $1 M per acre. I get phone calls twice a week from people “wanting” to buy my little starter home there. There must be a whole industry of people paid to make those phone calls and mail the letters. I’ve been wondering if Miami is gonna relocate itself to the gulf coast when their own city drowns. Or if the russian mob that thrives in Miami is expanding.

Maybe there will be some huge tacky-wealthy development put in there now. Some money launderers will get to work. And tax deductions for people that don’t need them.
Too bad.

I never went to it much since I was in Tampa; but I was at the Anderson Road flea market every weekend, and sometimes the Oldsmar flea market as well. From what I've been told, both of those are gone, too.

WW is on a flood plain and is on the top end of Tampa Bay(Really Lake Seminole) where the wildlife estuary begins. If the development goes anything like it's gone elsewhere in Pinellas, there will be some high priced "water view" units with the rest being priced 250K on up.

Sadly, they'll be built of lumber and osb on pilings sunk in the muck. When the big wind from Africa blows, they'll collapse leaving a lot of folks wondering where they'll live next and homeowners wind insurance rates will increase exponentially.

Of course the water quality in the estuary will suffer and there will be a reduction in the amount of blue crab, redfish, speckled trout, snook, sheepshead, mullet and mangrove trees.

I forgot to add: They only gave a week or two notice and the stands have to be emptied by June 30, 2020. They also have to be emptied between the hours of 9 a.m/4 p.m.. That makes it great for the folks that used it as a part time job and may just now be going back to work.

But on the bright side. Some developer will make a bundle.
