1. Apples and oranges. In one he's babbling happily about

himself, the only thing he cares about, on something he believes he's a master at.

In the other he's resentfully reading something he doesn't believe in that's full of names and places about which he knows nothing and cares even less. AND he knows from unhappy experience that it has to fill the time scheduled.

Another part is that he's definitely lost a few steps, I'm sure some to age, and likely also some to drugs.
