FDR swam, Ike golfed, Shrub biked, Barack played basketball, hell even Reagan chopped wood and rode horses. What does Orange Julius Caesar do? Other than swat a golf ball (and then get back in the cart), he periodically extends his forearm to pull the KFC bucket a little bit closer.

(2,036 posts)Our business, the nations business, is whether he can do his job. He cant. Hes never been able to. He was always uniquely unqualified for the position he now holds. But that disqualification has nothing to do with his weight. His overall health may correlate to his weight, but hes already president and not about to be 25th-ed, if thats your hope. The constant, gleeful comments about his weight on DU are gross. Hate the man because hes hateful, not because hes overweight, like two-thirds of America.

(34,857 posts)Is he even capable of leading the nation for four more years at this rate? He's a walking stroke or heart attack with his current weight.
Ms. Toad
(34,074 posts)The link is not inherent, nor is it weight inherently linked to strokes or heart attacks.
I have diabetes (also a strong correlation to heart attacks), and a BMI of 29.7 - compared to Trump's roughly 31, and over 60 (a strong correlation to heart attacks). My risk of a heart attack over the next decade - based on several reputable risk calculators ranges from 1% to 6.3%. Only one of the risk calculators even uses weight as a factor in risk determination.
So - no, his weight (alone) does not make him a walking stroke or heart attack. It is a lot more complex than that - but you are in "good company" because far too many doctors unfortunately see only weight - and miss the real health issue that needs to be addressed (lung cancer - it's hard to breath because you are so fat), kidney infections (your back pain is because you are so fat), colon cancer (your constipation is because you are too fat).
There are some things that are relatively inextricably linked with weight - joint pain, for example. But heart attacks and strokes are not.
We need to stop using weight as a surrogate for being unhealthy.
Drunken Irishman
(34,857 posts)He is at a very high medical risk because of his severe obesity. Your BMI puts you at overweight. Trump is not just overweight. In fact, his BMI puts him at obese - but I think he lies about his weight. Trump is at least 300 lbs - or at least pushing it.
Add his age, and the stress of the job, and his apparent medical decline and I think he's the most unfit candidate we've probably had seek reelection since FDR ran for his fourth term.
And we know how that went.
Ms. Toad
(34,074 posts)He is obese, but the distinction between obese and overweight is a tenth of a pound. I was obese last week. I gave you the actual BMIs so you could see how close they are. All except one of the 10-year risk of heart attacks calculators used the most recent cholesterol numbers I have - from 6 months ago when my BMI was 34 (higher than Trump's)**. My 10-year risk on the only calculator that even uses weight as a factor was .1% higher when my BMI labeled me obese, rather than overweight
Officially, he is barely obese. Even taking your weight estimate - and whacking off 3" from his purported height - his BMI is barely over 40 (the lower threshold for severely obese). He likely weighs between your estimate and his official medical report and he is likely between 6'0" and 6'3, which would put him in the mid-range for obesity.
He may well be medically unfit. I certainly think he is mentally unfit - he has very little executive reasoning ability (an essential tool for serving as the leader of any complex organization).
But my point is -judge him on his health issues; don't just assume that because he is obese that he is a walking stroke or heart attack. I'm not - thanks to good genetics that keep my HDL high and my triglycerides low regardless of what I eat. When my BMI was the same, or higher, than Trump's, my risk of a heart attack is 5.8% over 10 years on the only calculator I have found that even takes weight into account.
** I have changed eating habits recently due to diabetes (not weight). When my blood glucose is over 140 I can't stay awake and canfocus; when it is below 140 I am alert and function well. Restricting carbs keeps my blood glucose in the range at which I function best - even when I am obese. That said, restricting carbs typically also results in eating fewer calories - and weight loss. I also feel better when there is less weight on my feet and joints, so I'm not sad to be shedding weight. But the weight, in and of itself, is not inherently a predictor of heart attack or stroke.

(34,074 posts)Apparently you have never seen morbidly obese people.
But even if you are correct, you are still missing the point. Obese is not inherently unhealthy - and specifically - obesity is not inherently linked to strokes and heart attacks. Most CVD risk calculators do not even include weight as a factor.
Ms. Toad
(34,074 posts)Apparently you have never seen morbidly obese people.
https://www.hubtransformed.com/obesity-and-weight-loss
Morbidly obese is not a formal designation, but informally it is a BMI >40 (the far right image). Calling him morbidly obese does not make him so.
Trump is, at worst, the second from the right in the linked image - possibly the third from the right.
But even if you are correct (and he is the far right figure), you are still missing the point. Obese is not inherently unhealthy - and specifically - obesity is not inherently linked to strokes and heart attacks. Most CVD risk calculators do not even include weight as a factor.
Drunken Irishman
(34,857 posts)He also lies about his height. He claims to be the same size as Obama. Not true. He's probably 6 foot even.
At 6 foot and 300 lbs, his BMI would be 40.7.
Morbidly obese.
Ms. Toad
(34,074 posts)weight is not inherently linked to health (generally) and risk of CVD, specifically. If it were, why is it absent in most of the calculators - and why, in the one where it is include is there an inverse relationship between weight and risk (at least at the margin between overweight and obese)?
As to whether he is morbidly obese - find a profile of Trump. He is not even close to the person at the far right (with a BMI of 40+). If you don't like that image, do your own search. I didn't cherry pick - he's just nowhere near the profile view for mobidly obese.

(34,857 posts)Someone who is morbidly obese is going to have problems. Especially at his age.
But there absolutely is a link:

Bottom line: He is a very unwell man. Some of that is due to his morbid obesity - some due to other factors.
End of story. Have a nice day.

Let's all smoke and get really, really fat since, clearly, being 300+ lbs is not, in any way, bad for the human body.

(34,857 posts)Being obese, especially morbidly obese, is not healthy. In the least.
Ms. Toad
(34,074 posts)and only one of the risk calculators for coronary disease (the specific diseases you mentioned) even includes weight as a factor - AND in that instance (at least with the rest of my numbers plugged in) it was a negative correlation - the more I weigh - the less at risk I am.
These calculators are provided by the Cleveland Clinic, the Mayo Clinic, the American College of Cardiology, the American Heart Association Task Force (to name a few). But I guess they don't know what they are talking about - since only the Mayo clinic even asks for weight.
Drunken Irishman
(34,857 posts)Your own scale showed it. You said anything greater than 40 BMI. His BMI is likely 40.7.
Ms. Toad
(34,074 posts)and shrunk him by 3". You have no basis for doing so other than a desire to label him morbidly obese.
There is no factual basis for suggesting his weight is 300 lbs. His height is a closer call. His former driver's license says he is 6'1" Comparison to others uggests he may be shorter. But if you compare his profile to other 6' people who weigh 300 lbs you lose all credibility. I do think he is lying about his height - perhaps even about weight. But not by that much based on comparing his profile to those of people with a BMI of 40.
Drunken Irishman
(34,857 posts)Since we both admit he's lying about his weight/height, all either of us can do is speculate.
To compare, here's a 6'0, 300 lbs man:
Doesn't look that much bigger, or any bigger, than Donald Trump.
You can see other similar pics here:

Anyway, this discussion is over. Trump is unhealthy, fat and not fit to lead this country. Though I will concede the fatness is the least of our worries.

(17,181 posts)I would expect a person to tack on a few pounds here and there. The job itself turns your hair gray. And after a couple months in office, I probably wouldn't feel much like smiling, either.
But when someone makes it a point to body-shame, and belittle, and disparage everyone who doesn't kiss their swollen ass, all bets are off as far as I'm concerned.

The additional weight in and of itself isnt that alarming but in conjunction with his other problems can only hasten his decline and demise.
This isnt about fat shaming or making jokes.
He is unwell and not fit for office. Mentally or physically.
