(38,601 posts)To decide, together with all the affected authorities, how they want to reform, reinvent, and reimagine their police departments. They have until April 1.
So...hes kind of telling the truth. Now people need to get to work and figure out what they want and whos going to lead these efforts.

(8,732 posts)The protesting is the only voice and advantage we have.
"Discuss reforms" and "we will look into it" is classic govt bait and switch.

Today the hard work of change begins.
I signed an Executive Order saying that police agencies MUST sit down w/ community & adopt reform plans by April 1 to be eligible for state funds.
It's time to put pen to paper & enact systemic reform.
No reform - No funding.

(8,732 posts)But the person with all the power is asking those with none but their collective power to protest to give up that power on a "let's talk about it and maybe we will implement some reforms sometime in the future"
Its rings of classic political bait and switch.

(38,601 posts)They just have to sign off on that to not lose funding.

(2,595 posts)protests are not just local but national. We may be seeing better change local, but still a slow walk nationally. Also, these protests are about not only injustice to blacks but injustice in our society, politics, economics. I am happy to see the protests continue.

(9,119 posts)are helping that to happen. They are setting the agenda and Trump and the GOP are failing to even acknowledge there is a problem. So, I agree about the advantages of continuing protests.

(3,268 posts)...if they're tired of seeing white people joining their protests?
flotsam
(3,268 posts)but perhaps the black community is enjoying the ongoing participation of whites. And just maybe this ongoing melding of outrage is a good thing. And oh yeah, another black man was murdered on camera in Atlanta yesterday so it would seem the police are not yet onboard...

(16,616 posts)Many of these protests are sympathetic. Maybe NY is on the road to solving its problems, but the protesters are not just out there for New Yorkers, but for other locations in the US where police are out of control. There are George Floyd protests in Europe.
We had a protest here in my little dinky town, not to protest our police (who actually escorted and protected the protesters) but the endemic problem.
I also believe these protests reflect distrust and disdain for Trump's sheer ignorance on this issue, so there's a conflation going on that still needs to be addressed (mostly by voting him out in November) but the protesters are sending a message to Trump too IMO.

Right now the person with all the power is asking those with none but their collective power to protest to give up that power on a "let's talk about it and maybe we will implement some reforms sometime in the future"
It rings of classic political bait and switch.
