and the cops stopped to buy him a hamburger - think on these things - systemic racism is everywhere.

(66,437 posts)It wouldn't surprise me if they ruffled his hair while he was eating his burger, and told him "Nice shootin' there, son!"
I can hear them

(26,097 posts)The jail does not serve food after a certain time -- they literally do this for anyone arrested after a certain time. This is a fact.
People need to stop with this fast food thing, it literally shows the cops did what they should do. A much better and more important thing is that he was taken into custody alive.

(12,319 posts)And they do this routinely for black defendants as well?
Represented hundreds of criminal defendants in my career as a criminal defense attorney.
Never had this happen to a single one of them.
Then again, I'm retired so maybe this is a new thing.
At any rate, I doubt anyone would die of hunger simply because they couldn't get a bite to eat overnight.

(28,942 posts)That's horrible; that's torture. Why that's almost as bad as being murdered.
You really think they would have treated a black man the same way?

(239 posts)I worked in a prison and they can get you something to eat if you are brought in after mealtime. And as I recall the punk was caught in the middle of the day so he would have gotten dinner at the jail. And to say that cops do this routinely is absurd. I can't imagine any cops saying, "We are taking you to jail now but let's stop at a fast food place so I can buy you some lunch because I know you are hungry." That doesn't happen.

(143 posts)I sincerely hope you used the wrong word there. "the cop did what they SHOULD do" BULL. it may be a rule, but it SHOULD not be. that murderer should have been taken straight to jail. screw him if he goes hungry for a few hours.
and please, as at least one other pointed out, give the law that says the police have to stop and get something to eat for a murderer. because I very much doubt it.

Another thing that has bothered me the most. Roof could not have chosen a group of more brilliant, wonderful public minded souls than he took that night.
What treasure was lost that one night.
On the day he was captured (June 18, 2015), Roof confessed to committing the Charleston attack with the intention of starting a race war,[45] and reportedly told investigators he almost did not go through with his mission because members of the church study group had been so nice to him.[46]

(239 posts)Some people say that the cops were just being "nice". Uh-huh. In my view they were rewarding Roof for killing those Black parishioners. Can you imagine if Roof were a Black kid who killed a bunch of White Evangelicals? He would have never made it to the jail alive much less being given a hamburger.

(18,486 posts)My problem is that they they treat black and brown suspects (and even black and brown people who aren't suspects) like animals.

(4,308 posts)They keep saying that these Black and Brown people are dirty, but then they try to force them into taking care of their food, their dishes, their laundry, and their babies. They keep saying these Black and Brown people are subhuman, but then they hold them to superhuman moral standards. They look happy to be inflicting pain and agony on these Black and Brown people, as though the Black and Brown people were all born guilty of some horrible crime.

(11,742 posts)It isn't about the hamburger per se however. Police should treat all suspects with humanity.
The problem is that while Roof and many other White people who are armed and have been caught after committing horrific acts of violence, are taken into custody alive and in reasonable shape, Black men AND women who are typically unarmed, have been beaten severely or killed after interacting with police for minor offenses.
George Floyd was detained for POSSIBLY passing a counterfeit $20 dollar bill. He did not get a hamburger, he got killed. Breonna Taylor got no hamburger. She didn't even get the chance to do anything, she was killed in her bed b police who broke down her door for no reason. Philando Castille was not offered a hamburger. He was shot dead for no reason other than a police officer's irrational fear. Tamir Rice received no offers of a hamburger. He was killed within seconds of police arriving on scene. In contrast a White man armed with an actual LOADED AR-15 was walking around on the sidewalk, drunk, yelling, and threatening police and they took over an hour and a half to talk him down. He got his AR-15 back too.
It isn't that police treat suspects with humanity, it is that they treat only some suspects with humanity while just killing others, and it is typically based not on the actual threat, but on the perceived threat of Black skin.

(523 posts)The cops are transporting a suspect in mass murders, and they take him to a burger stand. Even if he remained locked in the police car, there seems a risk of something such as him getting loose or someone trying to free him or hurt him. Better that the cops take him straight to the police station without any detours or delays, and a separate trip be made to pick up a burger for him (if that was appropriate, which I doubt).
