(66,438 posts)3. IIRC, the whole 'toppling Saddam's statue' thing was not so much about toppling the statue
as it was about staging it to look like a spontaneous 'raising the flag on Iwo Jima' moment.
It wasn't the Iraqis joyously tearing down a symbol of their oppressor; it was a bunch of U.S. Army guys in a city square devoid of Iraqi civilians. They were trying to lend support to Dick Cheney's idiotic pronunciamento that the Iraq War would be just like World War II, and the Iraqis would greet us with kisses and candy and flowers and spontaneous 'Victory in Mesopotamia Day' celebrations.

You can't celebrate and participate in tearing down statues overseas and not see your own citizens do the same at home.
