I did not know about it until well into adulthood. I'd be hard pressed to tell you when I first heard about it. Perhaps twenty years ago. I have never lived in a state where getting the news of the Emancipation was a big deal to the locals who it affected.

I have always known about the Emancipation Proclamation, and was more or less taught it school that it freed the slaves and wasn't that just wonderful! I understand now a lot more of the nuances of what was involved, what went on.

the Ivy League colleges have failed big time- institutional racism is everywhere - it is so normal - so accepted.
The media are also responsible

I ask this question every time we go to war: Where are the social scientists? Why are we having this cultural dispute with whomever it is we are going to kill? Is it just a cultural misunderstanding? But nobody who is marching to war wants to think about those things.

but if a social scientist speaks out into a void, will anyone listen? The problem is not making their voices heard or making it possible for them to be heard.
