updates. On 6-16- 20 I received notice that the update to version 2004 was available. Went through the process. It took about 3 hours and the update failed. On 6-18-20 the version 2004 update was again presented. Went through the process and it took about two and a half hours. The update failed.
Interestingly enough, during the last bit of operation in the final installation today there was text on the computer monitor that read "undoing changes to your computer". DUH!
On a side note, I'm still getting regular updates to my WIN 7 machine, you know, the one Microsoft said it stopped supporting back in January of this year? My WIN 7 unit is looking better and better to me every day!
Here's a link to a search I ran on the version 2004 update, if anyone can make sense of the data:

Lotta frustration and head-scratching going on here...

(146,333 posts)I do not allow automatic installation of updates, but choose the time for them. Before I do, I shut down absolutely everything that is running, including background applications and unplug oddball USB devices. Then, I choose the Update and Restart option from the Shut Down list and let it update my PC.
So far, that has seemed to work. I have one oddball device that requires an altered driver that is used by Windows 10. It is an SDR radio receiver dongle that plugs into the USB port. Before any update, I enable the unaltered driver that device requires, as well.
So far, so good.

(14,691 posts)surprised that windows 7 is still doing updates too. They haven't done much for my computer though. Lol that might be because my HP laptop is 10 1/2 year old. It's been chugging and sputtering for about three weeks. Just ordered an Acer laptop, hope it gets here before the ultimate crash!

(14,118 posts)still work (bought the XP unit in 2005 new, never any problems that a good cleaning with Malewarebytes didn't fix) So it's live and learn and always have a backup!
2003 xp (my first and favorite) died because it only had 512 mb of memory and I was computer stoopid back then. My 2005 Vista crashed for no known reason other than it was Vista. I like 7 because it was closer to xp. Fought off 10 since it came out and now I'm going to have to learn another system and computer. Lol I'm too old for this!

(6,267 posts)My laptop is on XP and doing fine too.
One of these days I'll make the time to switch to Linux and say goodbye to the Pied Piper.
Sometimes I wonder how people would react if car makers made owners upgrade their engines every couple of years.

(3,212 posts)they mess things up all the time.
Even the one on my work laptop messed up my sounds for alerts for Skype, and messed up indexing of my document folder or something.
I was trying to find a doc with FILE:building , but Windows couldn't from Documents, where the file was hiding in a subfolder.
But if repeated the seach from c:,it found it after a while.
Oh well.

(22,168 posts)Hated Windows 7. Hope I like Windows 10 that just arrived on a new computer. Tech coming tomorrow to hook everything up, and hopefully fix my almost new printer.
Funny thing. The mouse on the laptop died last weekend as well. (is it me, or them?) I can use it if I plug the desktop mouse into it, but tied to the desk, and pain in the butt.
