ViceWASHINGTON President Trumps poll numbers have never been worse, and Republicans are starting to panic that he could be headed to a historic wipeout that could drag the rest of the party down with him.
Trump has trailed former Vice President Joe Biden by almost 10 points in recent national polling. And Republicans privately admit things look just as bad at the local level. More than a half-dozen GOP strategists working on Senate and House races told VICE News that theyve seen Trumps numbers plunge in states and districts across the country. His standing with voters was already suffering from his botched coronavirus response and his inflammatory reaction to national Black Lives Matter protests has pushed him even further down with key groups of voters.
The environment really sucks for us right now. Weve got a worldwide pandemic, the economy is slipping and now we have a race war tacked on, warned one GOP strategist involved in multiple races. If the election were held today, wed be talking about a wipeout. Wed be in landslide territory.
If the election were held today, wed be talking about a wipeout. Wed be in landslide territory.
The president badly trails Biden in states and districts that went red in 2016 that he needs to win again in 2020. Trump is in alarmingly poor shape in a number of states that appeared well outside Democrats reach at the beginning of the election cycle. And his terrible numbers arent just hurting him: Republicans are increasingly concerned that he could cost them the Senate as well, handing Democrats unified control of Washington after the next election.

If anything, I expect Russia to stay relatively quiet this time around. President Biden won't be nearly as forgiving as Trump, and Putin knows this.

(94,745 posts)This was about accessing voter databases, not voting machines or election tallies.
At worst they could have deleted voter registrations to make it hard to vote. But since Republicans do that legally, no Russian impact.

(68,696 posts)on the look out for ratfuckery; however, I say we win this time. The thing about this sort of post is instead of motivating people, it makes them feel hopeless. IMHO..that no matter how hard they work...we will lose-the Russians, ratfucking etc. Well we won quite a few elections since 16 and I say we will win this one as well. I see no good coming out of posts such as this; But I certainly do not dispute your right to be as negative as you choose. Carry on. I on the other hand will enjoy the small victories like good polls for Biden now...on the way to what I hope will be a landslide for Biden in November.

Rather than losing to Biden, Trump is perfectly capable of creating his own reality where he's done a magnificent, great, better than any president ever job, made America great again and has nothing left
to accomplish. He quits on top and never is burdened with "losing".

(14,565 posts)Currently there is extreme overreaction to recent trends. I never participate in that, or make silly assertions that it will keep going in the same direction.
This is a general election, not a primary. There is no such thing as a legitimate 12 point lead or legitimate 8 point lead. Biden is not special enough to win by those margins. He is an old man whose weaknesses will show up. He'll make mistakes on the campaign trail. Once mistakes like that show up they will earn tons of scrutiny and the race will naturally tighten. There will be themes of the devil you know superior to the old man you don't really know.
That is the reality of the matter. Negativity is not an attractant. We will never win huge in a general election when our overriding theme is Anyone But Trump. The only way we could have won by the currently touted national margins is if we had an extremely charismatic young "vote for" candidate. Unfortunately the 2020 slate did not include that type of candidate.
This stuff is very easy as a handicapper. Go ahead and bookmark. It will play out the way I describe. The great news is that Trump's approval rating has dropped to the level that now I would rather be our side than their side. Scant months ago when Trump was steadily climbing on 538 compilation I would rather have been their side. But as I have always emphasized, Trump would never be bright enough or restrained enough to understand that all he had to do as an incumbent was shut up and allow the situational advantages to play out in his favor.

(54,445 posts)Nothing would please them more than for the Democratic party to lay off and act as if we had already won the White House, 61 Senate seats and increased the House majority, only to wake up to another "surprise Republican upset" the morning after election day. Since 2000, we have been seeing those. We win when we win decisively. Cliffhangers that go our way are few and far between.
Despite what the conventional wisdom says, the voting machines, according to one DARPA techie in my family, are manipulable, pre-programable, and hackable, even without a direct internet connection, and their software is little changed since 2002. Detection of the manipulation is also traceable by forensic inspection, which is why the Republican companies that make them got that court order declaring them "private property," whose owners do not have to subject them to examination, only report their "results." I doubt they do it everywhere, because we can get court orders in flagrant cases, too. But when it counts, I'm sure they do it (Ohio 2004, anyone?). Just ask Max Cleland.
Or does anyone REALLY believe that when that one Ohio voting machine that WAS examined in 2004 gave Bush 3000 votes in a precinct with 600 registered voters, it was just a "glitch," as the Republican operators claimed, and then STILL refused to let the rest be examined?
I'm sure that if the Republican strategists got their way, polls would be released saying Biden was ahead by 40 points and that the Democrats are coasting to a two thirds majority in the Senate. Fine, but let's work like the opposite is true. There will be plenty of time to celebrate our hard work AFTER the election, and you can believe they are giving their people exactly that same message. In the meantime, figure they will be saying what they want US to hear.
