Tulsa Prepares for Big Crowds for Trump Rally, Juneteenth

TULSA, Okla.—City officials here are preparing for two days of massive public gatherings, starting with a celebration Friday to commemorate the end of slavery and then President Trump’s first re-election campaign rally in months on Saturday.

Police shut down some streets to traffic Thursday morning as Tulsa prepared for demonstrators in support of and against Mr. Trump to descend on the city’s downtown. Like other U.S. cities, Tulsa has seen recent protests against police brutality toward African-Americans.

The rally at the BOK Center is expected to be the largest indoor public gathering in the U.S. since the country went into lockdown three months ago due to the coronavirus pandemic. Some people were already lining up near the 19,000-seat arena Thursday. Mr. Trump is expected to address crowds inside the arena and at an outdoor stage.

Officials expect as many as 100,000 people to gather in the city due to the rally, and police plan to have a large presence on city streets in coming days, with assistance from the National Guard and other police forces.
