My friend who has been a Republican

told me he was Republican since he could vote up until this year. He is white and married a lovely African-American lady.

Things are changing and happily he is evolving. He has had a dose of the stereotypes his wife has to endure. I think expected that but not in such frequency and it rattled him a lot. He was put off by the WH COVID-19 response. The George Floyd and Ahmaud Arbery murders changed him because of his concern for justice and the fact that he is worried about the future of his bi-racial children. The last straw with him, being in the military and still in the reserves, is the calling up of servicemen and women to DC and the subsequent gassing of citizens so the orange menace could have his photo op.

He has informed me that he is no longer a Republican and expects to vote for Joe Biden in November. Judging by the posts he puts on Facebook recently, he in in earnest. He is a good guy. He made a mistake in 2016, but I'm happy he has switched sides.

But voting for Trump in 2016 was not a 'mistake'. It's not like the people who voted for him didn't know who and what he was at the time. He was the same squalid, vile, filthy, self-obsessed, disgusting monster he's always been, and still is to this day.

I refuse to believe anyone who says they've been had; that they didn't know he was so sordid. They're just covering up for the fact that they voted for him because he shares their slimy, inhumane beliefs.

All of his *evil ways* have been well documented for the last five decades. This was even more apparent if you lived in the NYC metro area as I do. I still have no understanding how anyone could have voted for him the first time.

I know many people who are a minority or gay/lesbian that are staunch supporters of the RepubliCON party.
It flies in the face of rational, reasonable thought........

And they call the black RepubliCONs: "Log Cabin Republicans"?????? I don't understand what that even means......

My dad had a union job.

My parents dragged us along to strikes and anti-war protests.

I always knew what Reagan was -- mean and ignorant.

White kids who grew up in very protected environments didn't see the actor Reagan behind the act, especially affluent white kids. They didn't see the small venal man who would do or say anything for a blow job. Nor did they recognize the symptoms of Alzheimer's disease, which were especially apparent during Reagan's second term.

There are still people who think Reagan was a great president. To acknowledge otherwise would be too painful for them; a recognition that many of the stories they tell themselves about their own success, that they "pulled themselves up by their own bootstraps" and so on, are lies.

Many Republicans don't recognize what's wrong with their party until it affects them personally. Maybe they have a gay kid. Maybe they start worrying about children in their own families who are not white. Maybe they suffer a serious accident or illness that bankrupts them. Even then they may still see only the narrow picture as it affects them and fail to recognize that we, as humans, are all in this together.

In our modern world of instant communication and 500 mile per hour travel we are all neighbors. There is no "other."

My late husband saw the light in 1992 watching Patrick Buchanan spewing hatred at the Republican Convention. He re-registered the next day, and was out registering voters with me that week-end.

Right now, I'm holding out hopes for one of my nephews. He was raised on Fox, so didn't know any better. But he is married to an absolutely wonderful, 1st generation American of Chinese descent...and they live in North Carolina. There's no doubt he's had to deal with the stares and flat out racism thrown their way. He knows Trump is a total liar and loser, but I don't think he's ready to cross the aisle yet. He bought into the Tara Reade narrative because "body language experts" on youtube said he was lying in his Morning Joe interview. But unless Trump somehow develops a brain and becomes a statesman between now and November, I think he will vote 3rd party. The education continues.

He could easily become a viable candidate again just by making a few adjustments in his behavior oh, so that he's not constantly alienating the respectability-minded mainstream Republicans, who love his tax cuts but cringe at his personality.

I mean, 4½ years later, the Andy Kaufman-in-a-Trump-suit joke still works because he continues to be a clownish imbecile, showing how a sturdy steady majority of Republicans will consistently value their party above the national interest.

Since I do not know the person referenced in the post, I cannot speak to the reason he voted for tRump. However, there are many people that would qualify as low info/no info voters. Certainly no one here on DU, but a lot of ordinary people simply have no clue about anything political. My wife was asked during a prior election " Who's running?" Really...
