Arl. VA county workers remove kid's BLM sidewalk chalk on Juneteenth

https://www.arlnow.com/2020/06/19/developing-county-workers-remove-black-lives-matter-chalk-art-on-juneteenth/

And it’s going to rain today anyway.

Thanks, Karen.

Snip:

Arlington County workers power washed away Black Lives Matter chalk art in front of a home in the Boulevard Manor neighborhood this morning.

An outraged neighbor posted on social media about the removal of the chalk art, which featured words and phrases like “There comes a time when silence is betrayed,” “Justice 4 All,” “MLK,” and “BLM.” A portion of the art was on the county-owned sidewalk and road, while the rest was in the home’s driveway.

“I am both saddened and outraged. My friend and colleague at Ashlawn has had a formal complaint made about her daughter’s chalk art on the driveway, sidewalk and street in front of their home,” wrote Dana Crepeau. “I spoke with the Arlington County employees, who did not want to remove the chalk but were told they must. I asked permission to post their photos.”

funny, and sad. The lengths some people will go to oppose anything that challenges their "white is right" world. As if they really care about chalk, and not the words the chalk is spelling out. They couldn't wait for it to rain, it was that egregious. Chalk.

Risking one's job and pension is a lot to ask of someone.

But the higher-ups could have used their discretion. I worked in municipal government and public works departments do not and cannot respond to every complaint. Whoever prioritized that complaint deserves the backlash.

Somebody in the county office could have just ignored the whiny complaint.
Or, dragged their feet for a week.
Or, told the family, next time make sure all of it is on your property.
But, just dignifying the complaint & sending a crew was foolish.
