Bed Bath & Beyond Is Laying Off Hundreds Of Workers And Offshoring Their Jobs

.

Workers at Bed Bath & Beyond call centers in multiple states received notices this week that their jobs are being eliminated this summer.

The home goods retailer informed employees at its Ocoee, Florida, call center that more than 220 people would be let go on Aug. 22, according to a letter dated Tuesday and obtained by HuffPost. A separate email from a manager acknowledged an “unsettling” announcement that had left employees with “concerns, fear and disbelief.”

A question-and-answer document provided to employees referenced mass layoffs at three other locations in the U.S. A spokesperson for Bed Bath & Beyond did not immediately respond to questions from HuffPost about the layoffs, including how many workers in total were let go.

The Salt Lake City-based NBC affiliate KSL TV reported earlier this week that nearly 300 workers at the company’s Layton, Utah, call center were told they would lose their jobs as of Aug. 15.

The other two sites referenced in the Q&A obtained by HuffPost appear to be in New Jersey and Massachusetts. Bed Bath & Beyond is based in New Jersey.

I just received one of their 20% off coupons in the mail. I guess that's going in recycling once I finish posting this.

2. I never understood their crazy generous coupons

I would buy a $12.95 item with a $10 off coupon. Crazy. Cost me $2.95+tax? How does that make sense.
Ditto with JC enny. No wonder they are going broke. Stupid CEO's. But CEO's will get golden patrachutes.
They should have learned from Walmart...no coupons, just lower prices across the board.

have not shopped at BBB for many moons, so you must be right.
We do have a JCP nearby, and I get embarrassed paying couple of dollars for a $12 item. But my wife loves it.

12. I shopped there first when it was just called Bed and Bath, years ago.

Then it sold really high quality products that were fairly priced. I used to get a pleasant homey on the weekend feel when I went there, everything was so pleasant to experience. Lots of people were shopping there, buying pricey items, I learned the in and outs of sheet thread count there and found excellent bed pads and spreads and blankets.

I went back years later and it had changed bigtime, lots of really cheaply made stuff, with spots of the high quality merchandise that caused me to shop there. I stopped going around twelve years ago, there was no need to go to a specialty shop when it didn't sell stuff that was significantly better than what Sears and Penny's sold.

7. You got it backwards!

BRB is a retailer, not a manufacturer. They import stuff from cheap labor countries and sell it here. Those lost retail jobs are not moving to China.
BBB is a victim of the shutdown due to covid-19 virus from China which has also demolished movie theaters, airlines, hotels, restaurants, cruises, barbers, massage parlors, bars, baseball, football, basketball, home cleaning services, and many others.

In 20-20 hindsight, the shutdown has caused more harm than good. If you subtract people over age 65 and those with 2 or more co-morbidities, the death rate of rest of healthy younger people by covid-19 is lower than influenza for healthy younger adults.

10. BBB is call centers business?

That is news to me. My daughter worked at BBB during college summers. Their merchandise is imported from cheap labor countries.
If BBB closes stores, the jobs of people working in their stores just vanish. Those are not moved to other countries. That would be true only if BBB moved their stores to China. That is not happening.

You said something about jobs being shipped abroad. NOPE! Jobs just vanished from lack of business due to shutdowns. The jobs in stores closed did not go anywhere. Those just melted away.

8. They've been struggling for a LONG LONG time, so it looks like they tried keeping their US employees

... as long as possible.

I've been reading for several years about how BB&B is in its death throes, so I appreciate their sticking with a US workforce as long as they did.
