(31,261 posts)Some Whites in the northern part of Florida refer to themselves as Florida Crackers. The origin of the term "Cracker" is in dispute. One claim has it originating from the physical process used to turn corn into grits meal. A second claim has it coming from cattle herders "cracking" their whips to drive herds around. Cattle ranching was the first big activity in parts of Florida after land was stolen from native people that had inhabited those areas for centuries. When I was in college, there was a popular syndicated state level columnist who wrote weekly for a column called "Cracker Florida" or something like that. His claim was that a Cracker could be either White or Black, since there were free or escaped Blacks among the first cattle herders.
Some Blacks use "Cracker" as a racial insult description toward Whites, for example "You can't trust those Crackers" is racist, since it is aimed solely at Whites.
