~snip~
Althea Bernstein, an 18-year-old Black woman, was on her way to her brothers house early Wednesday morning around 1 a.m. when she says she was attacked by four white men. According to Bernstein, she was waiting at a stoplight in downtown Madison, Wisconsin, and suffered second- and third-degree burns after the men used a spray bottle to douse her with lighter fluid before throwing a lighter at her.
I was listening to some music at a stoplight and then all of a sudden I heard someone yell the N-word really loud, she told Madison365, a local non-profit media group. I turned my head to look and somebodys throwing lighter fluid on me. And then they threw a lighter at me, and my neck caught on fire and I tried to put it out, but I brushed it up onto my face. Following the attack, Bernstein put out the fire and drove home, and was later treated at a nearby hospital.
Bernstein described the men as classic Wisconsin frat boys who appeared to be intoxicated. She said two of them were wearing all black and the other two donned floral shirts and jeans. Far right protestors in recent weeks have shown up in Hawaiian shirts to counter Black liberation demonstrations, but it is unclear at this time whether Bernsteins attackers are directly connected to the movement.
The president of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Dane County, Michael Johnson, released a statement on behalf of Bernstein's family stating that they were saddened at what happened to Althea and the unprovoked attack on her body. At this time, our family is asking everyone to respect our privacy as Althea is recovering from the burns on her face and neck.

(65,223 posts)If I read that right, I'm really pissed. I've been the guy with the Hawaiian shirt on the golf course for 25 years!
I'm not changing for these tools!
But, she mentioned floral shirts.
A coincidence?

(7,403 posts)Probably means there was a traffic camera that picked this up. I wonder what that might show.
I would like to see more evidence of this. Is there lighter fluid traces on the drivers seat, for instance or finger prints on the lighter.

(13,142 posts)Article from 6-25:
Discord, a platform popular with gamers, has shut down one of the largest servers used by followers of the right wing, anti-government boogaloo movement after it was exposed in a VICE News article.
Boogaloo is code for civil war which is the ultimate goal of this insurgent movement thats pulled in hardline libertarians, anti-government extremists, online shit posters and white nationalists. Adherents are often known as Boogaloo Bois, and they've been showing up to anti-lockdown and anti-police brutality protests clad in their uniform of Hawaiian shirts and tactical gear.
The movement has also drawn in active-duty service members of the U.S. military, which VICE News reported on Wednesday. The article incorporated screenshots from the innocuously-named Citizens of Liberty or CLO Discord server that showed users offering their military expertise to help advance the goals of the Boogaloo movement.
Discords Trust & Safety team looked into the server after VICE News published, and determined that it violated their community guidelines for threatening and encouraging violence. Later on Wednesday night, Discord took action and removed the server and deleted the accounts of all 2,258 members.

He needs to be removed NOW. November is too late and we cannot risk another fraud election.

I turned my head to look and somebodys throwing lighter fluid on me. And then they threw a lighter at me, and my neck caught on fire and I tried to put it out, but I brushed it up onto my face. I got it out and then I just blasted through the red light I just felt like I needed to get away. So I drove through the red light and just kept driving until I got to my brother and Middleton.
Bernstein said she was able to drive to her brothers and back home without significant pain because she was in shock something she sees in other people regularly.
Ive had patients in shock and I know what shock is based on the textbook, she said. Its so incapacitating, you dont even realize whats going on. My brain still got me home and my brain still got me to call my mom. I just remember my face was bleeding.
This is a horrific crime and seems to me akin to attempted murder and a hate crime. I hope she can get the FBI to investigate and lock those four animals up.

(86,819 posts)I lived there during the early 80s and had a fantastic time. But things changed after the Mariel boat lift, a lot of those folks ended up in Wisconsin and after a short while of violence disrupting the night life, it wasn't fun anymore. I moved after that and haven't been back since.

(12,858 posts)Some yrs ago I saw an absolutely horrible unbearably long documentary on the Congo. It presented the constant wars in which women are raped often in horrible ways.
I'll never forget one chilling psssage--the narrator asked a soldier if he raped women? Yes. Girls? Yes. Why? Because I can.

(21,631 posts)She will need help with medical expenses, and with living expenses. She will need counseling. She might need skin grafts or plastic surgery, depending on the extent of the damage to her neck and face.
She will need the assurance that the perpetrators are brought to justice, and that people care.

(25 posts)was spent in very poor areas of RI which were made up mostly of poor people of color. Though I am white
I saw first hand hundreds of acts of aggression against African Americans and other people of color. I have been amazed at the inability of people with fair skin to recognize the ugly truth of racism and police brutality in this country.
I hope the current Black Lives Matter movement continues to grow and put real political pressure on white America
and achieves much needed change in our society. Maybe we can finally achieve some semblance of the society
our forefathers imagined.
