Anyone that has kids (and anyone else that is a kid, or just acts like one), has seen --or at least heard of--Sponge Bob.
There is one particular episode where Sponge Bob rips his pants and gets a big laugh over it. He decides to run with the joke, and it gets him bigger laughs each time he repeats it. In the end, he's repeated the joke so freaking many times that even your 4 year old kid (with all the attention span of a 4 YEAR OLD KID) gets burnt out on the gag. His fame deserts him, and he gets tumbleweeds instead of laughs.
Have you seen the episode? Doesn't matter, you just got the recap. You can imagine it...
So while we're all imagining that Sponge Bob episode, I'd like to thank all the folks who can't bring up the name "Santorum" without telling a scat joke, or making some innuendo. These gags get funnier each time I hear them, and I just want more and more. And more...
Thank you.

(533 posts)No Pokemon show, no cards, nothing...couldn't stand it. We could feel their IQ's drop with each second of viewing time. Actually, they were limited on all TV, but me and Mrs SaintPete got a laugh outta Sponge Bob, so...

(110,159 posts)the shit. kids, very young, lol, and i would discuss feed of little kids want to make them nag the parent to spend money where money should not be spent.
we used all these things as lessons.
i dont have issues with parents that watch spongebob, just in our house i would tell boys, they feed stupid. along with ed ed and eddy.
power girls feed anger. even when happy, they have an angry face.
johnny bravo? well enough said, lol lol
we often discussed what society did to manipulate, control and condition kids thru the examples the kids faced.
if a parent explained what was happening and then said, still funny and fun to watch. then in my book, the parent did their job and the kid could get it. get enough to keep them aware.

(533 posts)TV replaces active thought with passive experience. You sit back and let the images wash over you. Communication and discussion counters that, to a degree.
seabeyond
(110,159 posts)i am glad you add, to a degree. because though it is important, if there are no boundaries, then it only gets you so far. kids are 14 and 16. we talk about all this stuff and still i dont allow a lot fo shit. i tell them, in a couple years you leave the house, you are going to be free to do all this shit, but hopefully, with an older brain, they can put it in an appropriate place.

(11,366 posts)Spongebob is kind and helps his friends. He's a dedicated employee. He's innocent and wants to be accepted. He's loving to his pet - all admirable traits.
Yes, there are a variety of silly jokes that appeal to preschoolers, but it's not really all that stupid.
I have read the studies that say it makes kids stupid, but I find that watching it, like doing anything else, is fine in moderation. Blend "Spongebob Squarepants" with PBS shows and other educational programming and it's fine.
Both my children are highly intelligent and both watch/watched Spongebob.

(110,159 posts)my kids watched so little tv, so they had plenty i preferred. but it has never been a big deal. just our choice.
SaintPete
(533 posts)and that applies to all TV shows...
Except Barney. Barney will eat your soul...

(110,159 posts)boy watch spongebob?
i didnt let boys watch simpsons or family guy either. i hear they are kick ass. have seen pieces of those. no thanks. i think they are trashy.
can there be wit and lessons,.... sure.
but not what i feed my boys.
but that is ok. or i would hope.
limited tv at that age.

(10,926 posts)But this is moot: they will find a way to do what they like, anyway.
seabeyond
(110,159 posts)to work well for them. at a young age, was it a big deal kids watching it? yes. as a parent, and being responsible for their development, prioritizing things in this house, it was a big deal. they watched a little tv. was never an issue for them. they watch next to no tv now. has nothing to do with me, everything to do with their choices. at the moment, one is up the street playing basketball and the other in the driveway doing the same.

(533 posts)The name "Santorum" will always be synonymous with homophobia. Among other things,
Quantess
(27,630 posts)because of the nudity? I am completely serious.
Anyway, too bad if you're sick of santorum jokes. Santorum IS a joke. I get irritated and annoyed by a lot of trivial things, but I don't expect people to stop just because I'm bored of it.
Guess what, I'm pretty fucking tired of crotch sniffing peeping toms who want to play referee as to what other consenting adults do in their privacy, and try to impose their twisted "morality" on everybody else.
SaintPete
(533 posts)but I challenge you to show where in the OP I asked anyone to stop doing anything. In fact, I poked fun at my own annoyance.
Quantess
(27,630 posts)No biggie. Sometimes I get irritated at trivial stuff like commercials, dumb sayings, people who flip up their collars on polo shirts, even SWEATER VESTS like what that creep santorum likes to wear. Grrrr!
No really, someday I'm sure I will post about a minor irritation too. I can relate.
SaintPete
(533 posts)wearing flip up collars under other flip up collars. Don't get me started...

(10,926 posts)Santorum, for example.
Teabaggers, to take another.
But I guess pee pee and poo poo jokes are funny even to people who swear they are at the social, cultural, and political vanguard.
Quantess
(27,630 posts)He can't mind his own business when it comes to consensual sex. He wants to be the nation's crotch-monitor. He is the one who is obsessed with other people's genital areas. Santorum brought this upon himself.
I want that pest Santorum to stay the hell away from my crotch, and my uterus, and my access to birth control.
Whether the taste level of the jokes is sufficient for you is of little importance compared to what is at stake.
Dreamer Tatum
(10,926 posts)I think so.
Here is your argument:
"Mr. Undecided middle-of-the-road voter, I want to ensure that you understand that Rick Santorum effectively
demands that I reproduce on his terms. To do that, I am going to associate his name with a mix of feces,
lubricant, and semen. That should utterly convince you of the danger of Rick Santorum and my seriousness
about this issue."
Um, yeah.
