I have made a new acquaintance in my community. She is outgoing and looking to make friends. She has joined water aerobics, stretch and tone, etc. We have a lot in common regarding our hometowns and upbringing. I would like to hang with her. Problem is that she and her husband are sporting Ivanka 2024 stickers on their cars and I know that her husband in a Fox News viewer (also The Five). So I know where they are parked. My husband says no way can we connect with them and I agree. But I have a feeling that the time will come when she suggests we meet up for a drink, snacks, etc. I see her at the pool all the time and I feel it is just a matter of time before I am confronted. I hate it because I think I could like spending time with her but it is out of the question knowing they are repulsive. My husband says no way would he even consider it. Did I say we have so much in common because we all come from upstate NY? This is something we have never encountered in our over 50 year marriage. Sucks.

(9,952 posts)never go for hanging out with a person that has an Ivanka bumper sticker.
Leave it at that.
Chat with her at the pool.

(35,713 posts)She might have some attractive points but sooner or later the maladjustment that makes her a Trump supporter will show itself and then you have even a bigger problem. Best to nip this right in the bud and tell her you're all out of "friend" time right now.

(17,015 posts)Just remind yourself under that cheerful, fun loving persona lurks a heart that is as black as coal. She is ok with caging children, snatching health care along with their food stamps from millions. Who, Im pretty sure, if you told her how you really feel wouldnt ever speak to you again.

(6,819 posts)If she proposes something, simply say, Im sorry, but our values dont mesh. At this stage of life I only have friends who enrich my life.

(9,669 posts)let her come to you. And if that happens, don't take any shit from her either.
Ivanka 2024??? You can do better.
My two cents.

(158 posts)But it is always in the garage. Trust me, if i see any kind of trump sticker, yard sign, etc. I will report it. I have before and I will do it again. Unfortunately, bumper stickers are allowed I guess.

Tell her you read it somewhere.

Let them be mean, if they don't like the excuse.

(3,579 posts)Where or who put the sticker on their cars? And then work from there...
why would anybody but the owner of the car put a bumper sticker on it? She has mentioned her husband watches Fox all day and he watches The Five. Need I say more? He may be more pro trump than her, but still......?

(53,837 posts)You might nip it in the bud by casually bringing up the Ivanka bumper sticker and just be frank. Tell her you're a Democrat and don't understand how anyone can be for trump because of his racism, his horrendous bungling of the virus response and now his abdication of his obligation to protect our troops re: Putin paying bounties for their deaths. None of that is negotiable.
If you don't the confrontation will come later after diving into the friendship, especially with the campaign heating up and election day nearing.

(158 posts)We have already lost friendships over this issue and we do not need to try to start another one only to end in disagreement. We are in a mostly republican community/county in FL so we are already in the minority, but so be it. We can handle it. I mentioned to my husband that we should leave the car in the driveway, not in the garage, so each time they drove by they could see it. Childish, isnt it?
Trust me, this wont go much further because of the politics of it all. She/he can surely hook up with others with mutual views. Wont be hard to find in this area. Sure sucks though.

That should cover you.
