With veto threat, Trump dares GOP to back Confederate generals or risk his wrath

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump gave Republicans in Congress a tough choice Tuesday night: vote to honor leaders of the Confederacy, or vote against him.

"I will Veto the Defense Authorization Bill if the Elizabeth...Warren (of all people!) Amendment, which will lead to the renaming (plus other bad things!) of Fort Bragg, Fort Robert E. Lee, and many other Military Bases from which we won Two World Wars, is in the Bill!” Trump said on Twitter late Tuesday night.

It was at least the second time Trump has addressed the idea of renaming army bases named in honor of Confederate officers. In early June, amid widespread protests against police brutality and racial discrimination, the president said he would "not even consider" it. But it is the first time he has said specifically that he would veto the defense bill over the matter.

Is this really the hill he wants to die on?

The person being asked the question has to imagine what the bases will be renamed to. Whereas if the choice is between, say, the disaster that was Braxton Bragg and Gen Anthony McAuliffe, who gave the famous “Nuts” message to the Germans at Bastogne, people might be more amenable to change.

I think most people would be fine with a Fort Schwartzkoff as well.

Screw the top brass. Honor those who paid the heaviest prices and showed the most courage.

After Audie Murphy

I still think McAuliffe should get one named after him. It will inevitably become known as “Fort Nuts”

Pendleton is where he trained. I would not mind naming bases after him either.

If he caves in on this then it'll make him look weak to them.

"Why are you so dead set, so adamant about keeping United States military bases named after TRAITORS who FOUGHT AGAINST and KILLED Americans?"

They can also add, "Oh wait, you knew Putin was paying to kill American soldiers under your watch and you did NOTHING, nevermind, question answered"

Seriously though. People need to ask him and force him to answer why he is fighting so hard to keep bases named after traitors.

"Once a traitor, always a traitor." He needs to be tied to the word "traitor" as much as possible. That and "coward."

As much as it strays from the substantive and civilized version of politics most of us would prefer, electoral politics is a matter of primal messaging and advertising principles as it is anything else. That's part of what has led to the success of the right wing in the last 40 years. They've just been better at it.

There was a thread yesterday about GOP officials who were afraid to oppose trump for fear of tweetstorms.

So here's another chance for those cowards to show whether they have spines or not. And whether they give a flying fuck about their oaths of office.
