Sessions Called Black Scholar ‘Some Criminal’

July 1, 2020 at 10:44 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 235 Comments

Former Attorney General Jeff Sessions referred to Henry Louis Gates Jr., a celebrated Black Harvard University scholar, as “some criminal” in the New York Times Magazine.

CNN notes Gates had been wrongfully arrested by a police officer in 2009 as he tried to enter his own home. After the incident, then-President Barack Obama invited Gates and the arresting officer to the White House for a “beer summit.”

Said Sessions: “The police had been demoralized. There was all the Obama — there’s a riot, and he has a beer at the White House with some criminal, to listen to him.”

But I remember when that happened. It was a rare miscue by Obama that led to the beer summit. Obama took a verbal shot at the cop and it backfired on him.

He could have used that moment to point out that many black Americans had suffered the same type of injustice as Gates. It could have been powerful. Instead, Obama had to walk back his comments and have the "why can't we all just love each other moment."

I think that moment taught Obama a great deal about being President and seizing on opportunities. I don't remember him making a similar mistake like that again.
