This New Coronavirus Wave Isn't Like the Old Wave

Whistling past the graveyard

https://www.bloomberg.com/opinion/articles/2020-07-01/covid-19-cases-in-arizona-florida-texas-aren-t-on-same-scale

Arizona, Florida and Texas aren’t facing the same conditions as New York did in its Covid-19 outbreak.

Snip

Things may keep getting worse in Arizona, and its Covid outbreak may eventually surpass New York City’s. But it’s a long, long way from getting there, and I’m guessing that it won’t. That isn’t to say that things are looking good in the Grand Canyon State, or in Texas, Florida, Southern California or any of the other places now experiencing big growth in coronavirus cases. But the specific conditions that enabled the awful explosion of the disease in New York City are not being replicated.

Covid deaths in Metro Phoenix are only 1/14th of Covid deaths in Metro NY, on a per capita basis.

Bacterial pneumonia. Phoenix suburb. Lots of elderly, and they still get pneumonia, just as they did before.

even if a COVID test was not done, the cause of death will list COVID if the circumstances suggest it (e.g. based on symptoms and in a facility with COVID infections). Some states report these in a separate category from confirmed cases.

..one of which is the buggiest county on the west coast. I still will NOT go out to eat or congregate in any manner until theres a vaccine thats NOT endorsed by trump. I havent seen my dtr or grand kids in over a year and they are only 3 hours away. They may come over to visit in a few weeks but they are all house bound anyway..meaning they work from home and the grands are teens..both are total homebodies... one a 2020 grad Honors student. They will stay here a few days as my dtr is mandated to take a week long furlough. Srcub scrub scrub.. do I even dare hug them?

People go to work largely in their own car, to a one or two story building. There are few places with long lines (other than hipster bars) to negotiate.

new cases in Arizona today, at about 3000, is less than the number of daily new cases in NY in April, which was about 5000. But three weeks ago, the number of new cases in Arizona was 1400. On June 1, the number of new cases in Arizona were 187. So Arizona will be up past 5000 cases in a day pretty soon.

2) the article bases its assumption that things will not be as bad in Arizona on the fact that, by the time NY took action there were already over 10,000 cases. Arizona has over 80,000 cases. And they just closed bars, clubs and gyms TWO DAYS AGO.

The article is just nutty.

And it appears that there are a lot more deniers in Arizona than there were in NY. Articles like this don't help.
