Richmond Removes 2nd Confederate Statue

Thursday, July 2, 2020 at 5:27 pm

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -
Work crews removed a second Confederate monument in Richmond on Thursday, as the city rushes to take down statues that have long been seen as symbols of slavery and oppression.

A crowd cheered as a crane pulled a statue of Naval officer Matthew Fontaine Maury from its base, a day after crews removed a statue of Gen. Stonewall Jackson on an order from Mayor Levar Stoney to remove all Confederate statues on city land.

The Maury statue, unveiled in 1929, depicts Maury seated in a chair with a large globe above him. It was the last of five Confederate monuments erected on Richmond’s famed Monument Avenue ...

Across the country, confederate statues and symbols are going down.

Just this week, Mississippi voted to change its flag which featured the old confederate flag. On Wednesday night, a statue of Stonewall Jackson was taken down in Richmond, VA.

While changes are no doubt underway around the country, the 11 statues representing Confederate soldiers and officials are on display as part of the National Statuary Hall collection in the United States Capitol.

"They committed treason against the United States," House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said in a recent press conference ...

The Albemarle County Board of Supervisors will hold a public hearing on the county’s Confederate statue on August 6.

On Wednesday, the board approved to schedule and advertise the August public hearing on its intent to “remove, relocate, contextualize or cover” a monument to Confederate soldiers at the Albemarle courthouse.

The move comes on the first day that a new law goes into effect, allowing localities the authority to remove, relocate or alter their war monuments following a public process ...

KINSTON, Lenoir County — A Confederate statue formerly along Highway 70 in Kinston has a new location less than a mile down the road.

The Lenoir County Commissioners held an emergency meeting last week to discuss the statue, which then stood outside the Kinston-Lenoir County Visitors and Information Center. Commissioners voted unanimously to move the statue to the Wil King Civil War Site - a historical Civil War battlefield ...

5. Rome may appoint Confederate monument review panel

Jul 2020

From staff, AP reports Jul 1, 2020

Rome officials may appoint a citizens committee to study the monuments at Myrtle Hill Cemetery as several cities around Georgia are relocating their Confederate statues.

The Community Development Services Committee is slated to discuss the issue at its July 8 meeting. The group meets at 1:30 p.m. in City Hall, 601 Broad St., and via Zoom.

Dozens of residents turned out for a special called meeting on June 12 to debate — pro and con — the fate of the Nathan Bedford Forrest statue in the historic cemetery.

City Attorney Andy Davis noted that the statue was moved to the cemetery years ago, from its original location on Broad Street. He said that, under state law passed last year, if it were to be moved today it would have to be placed somewhere outside the cemetery in a similar place of prominence ...

RICHMOND, Va. -- A man carrying a flag that expressed his desire to protect Confederate statues was removed from the base of the Stonewall Jackson statue after he was surrounded by people watching the removal of the statue.

The man made his way to the base of the Monument Avenue statue as crews above worked to remove the statue of the Confederate general from its pedestal.

As onlookers crowded around the man with the flag, it appeared Richmond Sheriff's deputies were able to pull the man out of the crowd and into a cruiser. The cruiser then drove off.

It did not appear the man was hurt during the incident ...
