Drunken Irishman
(34,857 posts)And it doesn't help it was written by a right-winger who thinks Democrats are the devil.

(3,299 posts)And my wife's son, who is a Biden supporter,
has gotten through some tough times by
listening to it.
Drunken Irishman
(34,857 posts)I do not like the song.
It's cliched - and, as I mentioned, written by a guy who hates Democrats.

(2,749 posts)Exactly who is trying to take our freedom away? Its a straw man argument. I cant really think of any country in my lifetime that has tried to take our freedom away. So does he mean the left? Trying to take his guns away, or his right to walk around brandishing them in public places in order to try to intimidate people? Or to limit his ability to bring a gun with him to his college classes? Or expecting him to be responsible enough to wear a mask? Or his right to erect divisive statues that promote traitors as heroes?
Its designed to stoke an us vs them anger. Us, the Patriots vs. them the Not Patriots. Its meant to stir that anger up, and the energy builds as the chest puffs up.

(4,373 posts)But I've yet to read about or hear any country band say anything bad about stumpy.
Wasn't it the Dixie Chicks that apologized to British audiences for having shrub as
our prez? They lost a lot of record sales for that..
I don't care for country... ..If it isn't stevie ray von, or lz or du stones, or
38 special...I don't get going...

Just off the top of my head. Are Democrats

(2,749 posts)Kenny Chesney, Tim McGraw,Faith Hill, Carrie Underwood, Kasey Musgraves. More country artists that, if not Democrats/liberals, then definitely anti-Trump.
Theres always been a few, but in this newer generation, three are a bunch on our side.
We shouldnt cede country music to The Lee Greenwood lovers!

(17,444 posts)and it is over-played. Therefore, while there may actually be nothing wrong with the song itself, it leaves a bad taste in a lot of mouths. As a stand alone song it is probably fine, but this song, and Mr. Greenwood's name (I'm unsure of his true political beliefs) remind me of false, hyper-patriotism by right wingers.

(3,299 posts)My wife's son is going through a messy
divorce with a right wing bitch but he still
finds some comfort in the song. Go figure.

(17,444 posts)Music usually reminds reminds people of something else, for whatever reason.
If the song has helped your wife's son through some tough times, then the song is "good" for him, and no one can say that he is wrong for liking the song.
I hope everything works out for the best for all involved.

(3,299 posts)I think her son is also being taken advantage
of by RW scum trying to take money from him
but it's tough to convince him, he's really bull
headed once he's made up his mind.

(4,122 posts)Also, this is the song historians will listen to when they are trying to understand the origins of the Fourth Reich. This is the kind of jingoistic tripe that has been poisoning the minds of our fellow citizens for several decades now, causing them to throw all reason out the window and pledge unswerving devotion to one of the worst people this country has ever produced, who is actually a puppet of one of our most devious adversaries. Prior to that it was used to help convince our population of the need to invade a foreign country which had done nothing to us and murder hundreds of thousands of innocents for the sole purpose of enriching already obscenely wealthy people.
Other than that, its fine.

(4,122 posts)Actually had to play this version through the PA at our gig tonight because the owner of the place thought it was important that everyone hear it.

(8,580 posts)And it's been reanimated by the GOP several times since. They have co opted it as their go-to song whenever they need to whip up the "God bless America - and no on else" crowd. Posters above have critiqued it as well as I could, so I will leave it to them, but the use of the term jingoism is completely accurate, IMO.

(14,492 posts)If one believes in prayer and a god of some sort, they should be praying for the entirety of humankind during a global pandemic, not just the USA.
Singing it makes the USA seem even more selfish and self-centered after Trump's "USA First" policies that have damaged our global relationships to a point that will take decades to recover.
Please wish your wife and her son best wishes from our loving bunch of folks at DU!......

(37,748 posts)If not, what then is the purpose of taking a thing which brings you happiness onto message board to ask what's wrong with it?
Not being clever, I really can't see a direct correlation between simply listening to something you may enjoy which then leads you to seek moral imperative on whether you can listen to it or not.
