Too soon to say if safe to hold Republican convention in Florida, U.S. official says

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A top Trump administration health official said on Sunday it was not clear whether it will be safe to hold the Republican National Convention in Jacksonville next month, as Florida sees record numbers of coronavirus cases.

Stephen Hahn, the Food and Drug Administration commissioner, also refused to confirm President Donald Trump's claim that 99% of coronavirus cases were harmless and called the situation a "serious problem."

With record numbers of people testing positive for the virus in Jacksonville and across Florida, Hahn was asked if it would be safe to hold the typically large RNC gathering in just seven weeks.

"I think it's too early to tell," Hahn said on CNN's "State of the Union" program. "We will have to see how this unfolds in Florida and elsewhere around the country."

Hasn't Florida had over 50,000 cases in the last 5 days?
And the 7 day moving average of death was 45, yesterday. 315 people in a week!
Yeah, it's too soon!

Florida will be most likely be seeing the 4th of July spikes. It probably won't look a hell of a lot better the then. We also have the Disney franchises opening up starting next week, which should also spread a lot of joy. "Come to Florida and bring back a souvenir virus with Mickey Ears."

The bottom line is in August, it will probably be too dangerous in any part of the country to bring thousands of people from the whole country together in a giant petri dish. That doesn't mean that Trump won't do it.
