I've noticed a lot of right wingers (aka racists) claiming the Black Lives Matter protests caused the recent spike in coronavirus cases.
This is NOT the case.
The reopening of the economy is what has caused the dramatic increase in cases lately, especially in states like Arizona, Florida, and Texas.
Any time a right winger claims the Black Lives Matter protesters caused the recent spike, throw this back in their face:
Protests against systemic racism held in 300-plus U.S. cities following the death of George Floyd did not cause a significant increase in coronavirus infections, according to a team of economists who have published their findings in a 60-page paper released by the National Bureau of Economic Research; these somewhat surprising results are supported by Covid-19 testing data in many populous cities where demonstrations were held.
In the immediate aftermath of Floyds death, health officials expressed great concern that protesters, potentially yelling and shouting in very close proximity, would quickly spread the virus, which might lead to devastating outbreaks.
However, researchers found no evidence that urban protests reignited Covid-19 case growth during the more than three weeks following protest onset.
In fact, they determined that, based on cellphone data, cities which had protests saw an increase in social distancing behavior for the overall population relative to cities that did not, leading to modest evidence of a small longer-run case growth decline.
The studys lead author, Dhaval Dave of Bentley University, said, In many cities, the protests actually seemed to lead to a net increase in social distancing, as more people who did not protest decided to stay off the streets.

The reopening is what caused the recent explosion of cases:
Local officials in states with surging coronavirus cases issued dire warnings Sunday about the spread of infections, blaming outbreaks in their communities on early reopenings and saying the virus was rapidly outpacing containment efforts.
We dont have room to experiment, we dont have room for incrementalism when were seeing these kinds of numbers, said Judge Lina Hidalgo (D), the top elected official in Harris County, Tex., which encompasses the sprawling Houston metro area. Nor should we wait for all the hospital beds to fill and all these people to die before we take drastic action.
Frustration about the pandemic response has mounted among local leaders, who say they have had to grapple with conflicting orders and frequently changing guidelines from governors and the White House as they try to curb sharply rising infections.
After Texas reported another single-day record for new coronavirus cases over the weekend, Austin Mayor Steve Adler (D) told CNNs State of the Union that there wont be enough medical personnel to keep up with the spike in cases if the rate of increase continued unabated in his city.

(7,417 posts)Don't forget the absurd narrative about all the New Yorkers flying to Florida and bringing covid with them
You can't untwist their pretzel logic for them because they are twisting it up intentionally.

(21,466 posts)I went to one in my community. Outdoors, space for distancing. Everyone wore masks. There were tables to register to vote and get BLM t-shirts. Hand sanitizer at each table.

(3,764 posts)They were outside and moving around. I was watching CNN and they had someone on that said there were 4 factors that determined spread of the virus.
1. Distance - if you are over 6 (12 even better) feet away from an infected person, you are unlikely to be infected
2. Time - if you spend less than 30 minutes in a location, you are unlikely to be infected
3. Airflow- if you are outside or in a large building without a lot of other people or even in a smaller area with good airflow, you are unlikely to be infected
4. Individual susceptibility.
The demonstrations were outside and people were moving around. Most of them weren't standing next to the same person for a long time and most of them were wearing masks.

(1,399 posts)I haven't been following them too closely, what all did they open up? Here in TX we know that it was a huge mistake opening up the bars in particular.

(3,014 posts)I was concerned about the protests. No gathering to me means no gathering if they say it increases risk.
There was someone on CNN last week who said something like, do you want to go to a bbq or bar today or do you want your kids to go back to school this fall?.

(778 posts)Have been peaceful rallies and even though social distancing wasn't the greatest, most of us were wearing masks. We also had one where local clergy attended in support and offered prayers. I prefer to call them "rallies" and Trump's hateful gatherings"riots".
It was obvious from the start they were going to try their hardest to pin this on the BLM and now it appears this could just bite them in the ass and they could become the super spreaders. Karma!
