NJ-09: Rep. Pascrell expected to make complete recovery after heart procedure
Rep. Bill Pascrell Jr. underwent bypass surgery Sunday but is expected to make a full recovery, his office announced.
Pascrell, 83, was found to have blockages in his arteries when he went to St. Josephs University Medical Center in Paterson complaining of indigestion and heartburn.
The lawmaker had been in Washington last week voting on legislation to strengthen the Affordable Care Act and to overhaul policing following the death of George Floyd. He tested negative for the coronavirus while at the hospital.
The procedure should allow the congressman to get back to his active lifestyle, said Dr. Mark W. Connolly, chairman of the surgery department at St. Josephs University, who performed the operation. While recovery varies from patient to patient, because of the congressmans strength and normal heart function, I am confident that he will have a speedy recovery.
Two years ago over the same weekend, Pascrell was hospitalized after being overcome by the heat at an event at Englewood Fire Department headquarters. He was treated for heat exhaustion at the time.
Pascrell faces a challenge in Tuesdays primary from Zina Spezakis, a clean energy executive, one of several supporters of U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., running against veteran House Democrats.
