RebeccaBell-Metereau for Texa State Board of Education, District 5
Rebecca Bell-Metereau is a teacher and the Democratic nominee for State Board of Education for District 5. As a board member, Rebecca will work to prepare our Texas schoolchildren for the 21st Century and reduce our over-reliance on high-stakes testing.
Rebecca Bell-Metereau is a longtime advocate for Texas students. She is a Professor of English and Director of the Media Studies Minor at Texas State University, she teaches literature and film. She is the author of four books.
After receiving her B.A. and M.A. from Indiana University, Rebecca Bell-Metereau served in the Peace Corps for two years in Africa. She returned to Indiana to earn her Ph.D. In 1997-1998, Rebecca was a Visiting Professor at the University of Oklahoma, and in 1999-2000, a Fulbright Scholar and Professor at Gaston Berger University in the Republic of Senegal in west Africa.
Throughout her career, Rebecca Bell-Metereau has been a leader in her community. She has volunteered in the San Marcos Independent School District and has served as a member of the San Marcos Planning and Zoning Commission, Blue-Ribbon Bond Commission, and San Marcos Solid Waste Commission, where she helped initiate curbside recycling in San Marcos. She has served as secretary, treasurer, and president of her neighborhood association, as representative to the San Marcos Council of Neighborhood Associations, and as secretary of the local League of Women Voters.
District 5 is composed of 11 central Texas counties—Blanco, Caldwell, Comal, Gillespie, Guadalupe , Hays, Kendall, Kerr, Llano, Mason, San Saba—and portions of Bexar and Travis Counties. About one-third of the voters of Bexar County and a bit more than half of the voters of Travis County live in Texas State Board of Education District 5.
Rebecca Bell-Metereau and her husband, Jean-Pierre Metereau, a Vietnam veteran and a retired professor, have lived in San Marcos for more than three decades. Their two grown daughters graduated from San Marcos public schools. Teresa S. Hobby, former Lt. Gov. Bill Hobby’s daughter-in-law, serves as Rebecca’s campaign treasurer.
