(25,857 posts)predicting a contested convention. It hasn't happened in something like 70 years, and given that the entire primary process is completely different from then, I feel confident in predicting we will never again have a contested convention.
For a very long time very few states had primaries or caucuses. The delegates to the national convention were chosen in the quasi-mythical smoke filled rooms, and "favorite sons", meaning some politician from that state, were something of a factor. The current system anoints a candidate fairly early on.
