New Jersey incumbents steamroll progressive challengers in primaries

ncumbent Democrats in New Jersey trounced progressive challengers across House primaries Tuesday, two weeks after liberals appeared likely to have scored key victories in still undecided races in neighboring New York.

Lawmakers in all primaries were either leading their challengers by substantial margins or outright clinched the Democratic nomination in their races Tuesday night despite a surge in mailed-in ballots that will continue to be accepted until next week.

The easy wins marked a contrast to New York, where progressive Jamaal Bowman was leading Rep. Eliot Engel (D-N.Y.), the chairman of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, by 25 points in an election that is still to be called. Meanwhile, Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D), chairwoman of the House Committee on Oversight and Reform, was running neck-and-neck with Democratic challenge Suraj Patel.

By contrast, no challenger got close in New Jersey.

3. We're pretty polarized here. The two parties got to gether and divied up the districts.

They got tired of spending a lot of money to run for office, so they got together and carved out R districts and D districts, and it is very hard to flip one of them to the other party. I would have liked to have seen competitive districts so people aren't disenfranchised, but that's the way it is. It's a form of gerrymandering that was mutually embraced by both major parties.

10. My Rep, Mikey Sherril flipped our district last electio, otherwise most folks are pretty entrenched.

My district is weird though, it carves out a small part of North Jersey (Essex County-Very Blue) and dumps it in with West Jersey (Redder). Mikey is a good rep for us now though, she's a vet, so she appeals to a lot of those moderate Repubs in West NJ.

The 11th. district itself only goes south as far as Bloomfield - while some of it is in Essex, most of it is in Morris, with a touch in Passaic and Sussex counties - North and West. It doesn't really go anywhere near Central Jersey.

Unless of course I'm misunderstanding you.

We lived right next to Brookdale Park - Mikie was our Rep by literally 50 feet the way the district is drawn, which was kinda funny. Now we're more firmly in Sherrill country.

Also, fun fact - the 11th. district is one of the top 10 most affluent in the country - pretty neat that it went Blue in the House.

I voted straight column A which was the progressive line, along with Bernie Sanders who, for some reason, did not appear with the other progressives.
