Holy shit, all the talk about schools this week is pissing me off.
Once again, this administration and the Republican Party lives to shame teachers. Non-stop guilt trips.
Fuck Betsy DeVos for suggesting schools just "gave up" this spring. I am amazed at the work we did as educators, changing the entire model of education LITERALLY OVERNIGHT. Delivering instruction, content, technology, food services, counseling, and on and on. Was it perfect? No. Was it all stressful for families? You're damn right it was!
But teachers did their damnedest to care for their kids in a remote setting, and to do it with absolutely NO lead time.
I'm tired of rich, entitled, ignorant fucks who have never been in a school, let alone a public school, keep forcing decisions for educators and then dare to get pissed off when the people who live with those decisions ask questions about the problems.
I'm fucking tired of the shame and guilt. "Want a higher wage? I guess you're only teaching for the money. You want your pension to stay in place? Why are you already thinking of retirement? Must not enjoy your job. Think a full re-opening of schools is unsafe? I guess you don't care about kids' mental health or academic development."
You will never see Trump and company criticize parents who want their kids to stay at home this fall. Can you imagine? "Shame on parents who don't want to send their kids to school. Do you just not care anymore?" Because teachers are the easy target, and when it comes to voting, there are more parents than teachers. Ain't no politician going to war with parents.
Screw Donald Trump, and screw Betsy Devos, and screw anyone who parades around shitting on teachers.

(17,006 posts)There is a large teacher shortage as of Jan 2020 there were 2,440 open positions. Florida ranks 46th in pay. There are a lot of teachers in the DROP program who I think will retire rather than risk their life.

(1,184 posts)There is a sub shortage in our area. Many of them tend to be older teachers, or at least retirees. How many of them are eager to work in this environment, let alone after a teacher or student in a particular classroom has tested positive for COVID?
I think there are lots of isolation and testing protocols to be worked out. If a teacher is exposed, do they quarantine for two weeks? What happens to the students? When would an entire class need to quarantine?
Not saying these issues can't be worked out, but when we ask "so what is the plan?" as it relates to these things, the response so far has usually been, "There's going to be a lot we learn through the course of the school year, so let's just all be flexible."
