Could the Cronavirus have an "up-side"? The long view (a short post):

Perhaps with the horrific results of this virus, and even because of them, we might come to realize the value of science and the need for collective (inter-governmental) action which will be necessary to mitigate the effects of climate change before we commit species suicide.

What do you think?

(Before I post this, let me say I don't respond to the intemperate.)

governments -- including bastions like the CDC -- failed miserably this time. Most of that failure can be attributed to trump, but it still does not bode well for future.

Response Team being in place. Having a worker in China. Having leadership who weren’t partisan hacks. Having an administration that actually listened to them. Considering all that it’s a miracle they have accomplished anything.

Much like the onset of HIV spurred advancements in medical research and knowledge, I suspect this virus will have a similar effect, with vaccine research and development processes being a likely area of improvement.

that said, we have an entirely fresh fight on the climate change front. businesses will still hold tons of political power, and as a nation we may reject donnie entirely in november, but that doesn't mean we're going to go full al gore, either.

as for the intemperate, i sympathize. i've tried to make the silver lining point on a few occasions, usually roundly shouted down.

personally, i never would have been born were it not for the holocaust (my parents never would have even met), so perhaps i have a warped perspective on such things

I'm afraid that until the Republicans clean their ranks of the theistic anti-science/anti-intellectual charlatans in charge, it is here to stay.

To actually act like they do have a mandate and maybe steamroll some things through like the republicans do when they falsely claim having one.

Hopefully Joe and the democrats will see an opportunity - they're already going to have to fix the dumpster fire America has become under Trump. They should push forward and go beyond. If republicans complain, the perfect response is right there, "This is needed because Trump and his republican lackeys so damaged the country."
