Central Park Birder, Christian Cooper will NOT help DA in prosecution of Amy Cooper

Source--"https://thegrio.com/2020/07/08/christian-cooper-wont-cooperate-amy-cooper/

snip--"Christian Cooper made a statement on Tuesday saying, “On the one hand, she’s already paid a steep price.” Cooper said, referring to Amy Cooper dubbed the Central Park Karen, “That’s not enough of a deterrent to others? Bringing her more misery just seems like piling on."

Much more at article & the NYT has one as well.
Sounds as if the DAs staff didn't get Mr Cooper on board first.

Kudos. His response probably does more good long-term than prosecuting the ignorant racist. Hoyt Jul 2020 #6

Not sure I would be as mature in the same situation.

Sounds as if the DAs staff didn't get Mr Cooper on board first.

Probably felt community pressure to set an example.

Unfortunately the videos of people threatening others are not stopping.

They seem pleased to be caught on tape acting like assholes.

Deterrence of future, similar acts requires some kind of criminal sanction. Still, it’s his call. Besides, the DA might not need his cooperation. The video is quite public and quite damning in itself.

All of which had national publicity - far more of a deterrent than what would likely be a relatively small criminal sanction (likely with far less publicity than the instant public informal consequences?

I agree with his call.

I suppose I feel bad for the New York DA who stuck his or her neck out to prosecute this case, but perhaps the prosecution can go forward without Mr. Cooper’s cooperation.

The way criminal law works is that the state is the victim; the actual victim is merely a witness. The state often (but not always) defers to the actual victim, depending on the strength of the evidence without its key witness and on the need to enforce the law as a deterrent to others.

Maybe he'd like to get this part of his life over and done with. The loss of her job probably cost her much more than a conviction for filing a false police report would.

Maybe a minor sentence of community service or something similar. Throwing her in jail seems overkill. She has certainly already paid a steep price for her stupid racist stunt.
