He and his base hate public schools, calling them liberal indoctrination facilities. They would love to defund schools in any way they can.

He thinks it can make him seem like a strong man to stand up against the teacher's unions. Law and order and returning the US back to "core values" and "family values".

They hate "inclusive values" and unisex restrooms and trans issues and critical thinking and studying fascist regimes in Europe of the 1800-1900s and "To Kill a Mockingbird" and teaching math fundamentals instead of the multiplication tables.

Not to forget evolution.
