University leaders described the decision as 'heartbreaking' in a letter sent on Wednesday
Stanford University announced Wednesday that it will cut nearly one-third of its Division I sports programs at the end of the 2020-21 academic year as the COVID-19 crisis has threatened to worsen an already existing athletics department deficit. The move will affect more than 240 student-athletes and 22 coaches, according to a letter from school leadership.
The 11 sports that will be discontinued are as follows: men's and women's fencing, field hockey, lightweight rowing, men's rowing, co-ed and women's sailing, squash, synchronized swimming, men's volleyball and wrestling. University president Marc Tessier-Lavigne, provost Persis Drell and athletic director Bernard Muir signed the letter which detailed the "heartbreaking news."
"The decision to discontinue these 11 varsity sports programs comes down primarily to finances and competitive excellence," the letter said. "With so many varsity sports and limited financial resources, we would no longer be able to support a world-class athletics experience for our student-athletes without making these changes."

(14,076 posts)The sports that are being cut are mostly sports that are not "big-money" sports. But people do benefit tremendously from participating in competitive sports. 240 student-athletes is a relatively small number, but it is a real loss for those students.

Without the certainty of king football there are nervous athletes all across the country in the so-called lesser sports.

(14,565 posts)"Men's basketball is the largest source of the NCAA's total revenue because the NCAA tournament brings in lots of money. But even before teams reach the tournament level, they generate revenue for their schools with individual basketball games. And at these school levels, basketball takes second chair to football for total revenue generated.
In fact, football garners more revenue than the next 35 other sports combined at Division I schools. On average, football brings in $31.9 million in revenue, while men's basketball (the second-highest grossing sport) comes in a distant second at $8.1 million. For reference, women's basketball brings in $1.8 million, while rowing brings in just $932,646"

(14,565 posts)As a USC alum I've been well aware of that streak. It isn't as well known nationwide because everyone focuses on solely football and basketball.
Stanford is incredibly consistent and dominant in sports like swimming and golf and water polo, things that are big if you attend a Pac 12 school.
Every indication has always been that the lower sports are treated incredibly well at Stanford, from coaching to staffing to travel, etc. That's why athletes who are already famous like Tiger Woods and Michelle Wie and Katie Ledecky have chosen Stanford, along with the academics of course...with a wink regarding Tiger.

(8,419 posts)After Stanford, UCLA, then SC and the Arizona schools.
Issue is the PAC12 cant compete in football. Partial west coast bias and add they make teams play each other unlike the racists fucks in the SEC.
And for you SEC defenders, play a full conference schedule in football and then get back to me, you anti democracy fucks.
And ponder this. The SEC bullshit scheduling, funded be the media has a direct correlation to how we have tRump as a President.
