NEWS: The Mississippi Switcheroo

It was a true sign of changing times when, last week, the governor of Mississippi signed into law a bill to remove the Confederate symbol from the state flag. What went less remarked upon was that the bill also included a mandate that whatever the new Mississippi state flag winds up looking like, it must include the words “In God We Trust.”

Clemson University sociologist Andrew Whitehead told Religion News Service that for white Christians, “When they hear ‘In God We Trust’ they kind of idealize this connection between the United States and a covenant with the Christian God,” meaning that the country “belongs to white Protestant people.”

Ms. Whitehead has a point, but I will take the small victory in Mississippi. Progress can be painfully slow.
