The Oglala Sioux Tribe has locked down its South Dakota reservation for a 72-hour period as a protective measure against the coronavirus.
Tribal President Julian Bear Runner has barred nonessential travel on or off the reservation, and all employees of the tribe except for emergency personnel have been placed on administrative leave.

Anyone who has left the reservation for more than 24 hours must self-quarantine for 14 days upon return, Bear Runner's order stated. An exemption will be made for medical appointments, but anyone leaving or entering for such an appointment must provide proof, according to the order.
The tribe has frequently been at odds with South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem (R) who earlier this year sought to take legal action after it established checkpoints in and out of the reservation. The Oglala claimed tribal sovereignty protected the checkpoints, but Noem said the tribe had no right to block federal or state roads.

(778 posts)Will be sure to stand in the way of them staying shut down just like she did when they wanted to prevent people from coming through there. They have very limited Medical Care in that area and are well aware they couldn't handle more than a few cases. The governor doesn't seem to understand that the reservations are a Sovereign Nation and she has a huge racism problem. A true blue South Dakota Republican! She will be looking for a reason to flex for muscle after her recent date with tRump.
