(90,364 posts)the pandemic is accelerating, July 4th weekend had lots of very crowded large parties with no masks and social distancing in many states so it will take two weeks for the numbers to reflect that.

(30,817 posts)I've seen a few posts on Facebook about how it's okay that so many are getting it because most are young now and not many are dying.
All the reports about ICU beds running out in hard-hit states are a [retty strong clue that people are going to start dying in larger numbers over the next couple of weeks.

(25,899 posts)The young ones dying are no help, because now they're not working and paying into the system. We need them!
In reality, some 63 million people in this country are on Social Security. I have no idea what the most apocalyptic predictions of deaths from this are, but I don't think at this point anyone is predicting millions of deaths. We are truly so early in this pandemic that there's no real point in guessing the final total.
If no vaccine is developed, if a lot of people are asymptomatic spreaders, if most of those who do develop symptoms either die or end up with long-term debilitating conditions, then the human species is doomed. Perhaps a handful of truly isolated groups will survive the death of the 7 billion, and eventually rebuild civilization.

(25,899 posts)people are a huge factor in the spread of the virus. Secondarily, I am speculating on the basis of no evidence whatsoever, that asymptomatic people may eventually develop symptoms and long-term after effects. I want to repeat that I have zero evidence of this, so please do not take this seriously. I honestly hope that the asymptomatic ones are gaining immunity, never have anything bad happen because of this virus, and however many people eventually die, the rest of us get to go on our merry way.
