GOP Lawmaker Wants More to Get Virus

Alabama state Sen. Del Marsh (R) said he is not concerned about the state reaching more than 2,000 cases of coronavirus in one day, WSFA reports..

Marsh says he wants to see more people with COVID-19 because “we start reaching an immunity as more people have it and get through it.”

My understanding is that they simply don't know at this point how long immunity lasts. And there does not seem to have been reports of people getting it a second time. Several months ago there were some supposed reports of that, but it seemed as if people hadn't actually gotten over their own first round of illness and relapsed, which is not the same as getting it again.

Excerpt

‘Last month, a study showed that antibodies may last only two to three months. Then research published Monday suggested that antibodies could last only three to five weeks in some patients.’

The article does point out immunity doesn't just depend on anti-bodies.

There's one other reason that the findings about antibody levels dropping shouldn't cause excessive concern: Your immunity doesn't just depend on these proteins.

White blood cells also have an impressive immunological memory that can help your body identify and attack the invading virus should it ever return. T cells can destroy infected cells, and B cells work to produce new antibodies.

And as I said above, if immunity wore off very quickly, we're far enough into this that I would think we'd see people coming down with this a second time.

The population of Alabama is near 5 million. Herd immunity requires about 94% of the population to be immune to break the chain of transmission so that means about 4.7 million Alabamans would need to catch the virus! However, herd immunity is only achieved if having the virus makes a person immune and we don’t know that there is substantial long-lived immunity in people who have had COVID19.

Politicians and pundits with no science background need to leave science to the scientists!
