I live in the country. Two of my neighbors came today to pick blackberries. They are sisters. They are not well educated or
sophisticated. They clean people's houses for a living. They showed up wearing masks, they worry about children and grandchildren
who are not being cautious. They worry about the schools opening. One said she was being criticized for not going to church, she does
not believe people should gather in buildings.
We did not talk politics or whether they watch Fox TV and I do not care about that.
They understand, they are cautious and concerned about this virus.
I thoroughly enjoyed their company. It does not take anything but common sense to act appropriately in this pandemic.

(22,756 posts)I do not know many of my neighbors' politics... I have a small stand out front by the road and sell honey and misc... I also make cloth face masks and offer them for free... I have a licensed bakery in my house and offer baked goods at the Stand for donation...
I do have a number of signs and sayings in my Stand that make it clear who I am...
people come, many wear face masks, even at my little roadside stand and they are more than generous with their donations...
your neighbors sound like my neighbors

(1,313 posts)The town nearby has been largely Latino since when it was part of New Spain. There are lots of ag workers, folks who work the fields and the packing plants, and all the related businesses in transportation, packaging, etc. Most of them are Latino. We have a square in the middle of town that resembles that of any central square in Mexico. Everybody wears masks. Everybody.

(11,738 posts)Common sense is a weird concept. It stems from our ability to integrate information and on where our trust is. While not all people who watch Fox News are rabid anti-mask people, they are more likely to be anti-mask because where you get your information does influence the information and how it is presented.
I prefer critical thinking, and scientific literacy over "common sense".

(40 posts)Had to go into Penn Medicine for my oncology appt this morning. I took Septa regional rail....everyone was wearing a mask and social distancing. One guy out of all did not have on a mask...the very calm conductor who was a woman and black told the white man he could not stay on the train unless he put on a mask..he became billergent and called her names and she remained calm and told him he had to get off at the next stop...he got off but continued cursing her telling her he was afraid of her and to get away from him. Nut case...but I was impressed at how well she handled the situation. Most of people going to Penn either work there or at high risk having cancer...I am one who is high risk and felt quite comfortable with how Septa is doing their part to help everyone stay safe.

(14,855 posts)It surely helps that she keeps her nose mostly stuck in a Bible while ignoring right-wing media like Fox News.
She does NOT have "common sense" in many ways, but being outside the right-wing bubble has helped her in this situation.
