A Positive Mask Moment Today

Needed staples. Big coffee, juices, dog food, dog treats, dental care, etc.
And, I needed cigars.
So, went to the WalMart at the town around 20 miles west.
Walking in, guy looks at tablet and says, "You can go straight in, sir."
So, he's actually keeping count. Good thing, number one. BTW, he's a pretty big dude.
Going around my right is a twenty something goes in, without waiting, and NO MASK!
Guy at door says, "Hey! Stop right now!"
He told the guy no mask, no entry. Then he says "Enforcing masks is what they're paying me for!"
Told him to get out.
Without a word, guy walked out.
Was glad to see someone enforcing the mask thing!

here in South Texas, we get to the grocery store about once per week, just recently went to Lowe's for some garden stuff. Every single person in every single store we have been to over the last month has been wearing a mask. Now, we have NOT gone to Walmart during that time, and I expect that they are not quite as diligent.

Still, South Texas is now a virus hotspot. Hidalgo County (McAllen, Edinburg, Pharr) led the state in new cases and new deaths recently. I keep hearing stories of Hispanics not wanting to wear the mask, but I have not seen one single unmasked person over the last month.

Seriously, I still have a sliderule. Given to me by my brother ages ago. He passed on that knowledge in case my newfangled calculator crapped out. No batteries required and if you're good at it, it's almost as fast as a hand calculator.

In one of my classrooms at the community college was one of those giant eight foot long demonstration models. You can get great accuracy with that baby.

I would pass out copies of log tables and ask students to compute the fifth root of 0.000314 using only paper and pencil and the tables.

A few years ago at work, I mentioned using a slide-rule to some younger colleagues, who said, "What's a slide-rule?" I had to bring one in to show them; they were absolutely AMAZED that you could do multiplication, division & trig on it!

5. ON mask enforcement...

Ok, I'm lucky to live in a locale where city and county officials got on the same page and MANDATED masks months ago. But, that doesn't mean everyone was particularly willing, especially early on.

So, I'm going to relay this story carefully because I don't want anyone to think I'm intending to be insensitive nor disrespectful nor inappropriately critical. Nor am I meaning to "make fun" of anyone. But, early on, when people who did not want to maks were most aggressive I went to our local Sam's Club and noted that they had assigned one person to enforce the mask policy and after talking with him and hearing about the intermittent confrontations--sometimes angry-- I really had to wonder about the choice of "enforcer." Not the burly stocking guys nor the young athletic male summer hires. It was my buddy, Arnie, a great guy, but also an achondroplastic (short-limbed) dwarf. Don't get me wrong, I've been greeted at the door by Arnie for a couple of years now and he clearly is professional, self-sufficient, and can hold his own. But sending him out as the one to confront the Trumpster types--pissed off that they had to wear a mask? There just seemed to be something perverse about that choice, but maybe not...

Still, the past two times I've gone in there I haven't seen Arnie, so I have to wonder... ??

I'm not a big guy. 5'9", around 165. So a guy being bigger than me doesn't have to the Hulk.
But, the guy I saw was a pretty big dude. Guessing around 6'3", over 250 pounds.
The "no mask" guy was bigger than me too. But, perhaps shear size is a positive attribute to that assignment.

That's awesome! If businesses would just all require masks in their shop(s), this would be fixed. Don't want to wear one? You can't come. People aren't going to stop going to Malwart, etc... They'll wear masks.

Of course the mandate should come from the government, not private business. But if elected officials don't have the stones to do it, businesses should.

to note that on the occasions I've had to go out (post office, grocery store, etc.) almost every single person I've seen has been wearing a mask. The few I've seen not wearing them have been sitting outside at coffee or ice-cream shops, mostly young people. Indoors, I don't recall seeing anyone without one, nor have I seen witnessed anyone kicking up a stink about having to wear one, or even complaining about it (although there was a customer at the post office doing the classic "mask-over-mouth-but-not-nose" thing). People are definitely taking it seriously. This is suburban MD by the way.

allowing retail places to refuse entry to anyone without a mask. There are a couple discount stores near my drug store, so when I pick up meds, I go to the other stores, too, to get various needed items in one outing.

At the drug store and discount stores most customers do wear masks. But since reopening, more people are going without them. Those stores do not enforce the mask rule. Sometimes I see an employee without a mask. People seem to think that reopening means the risk is over.

The only place I go to that strictly enforces the mask rule is my grocery store. A local business, not a chain. The owner is about 6'2" and large boned. There is a sign in the entrance that masks are required. He backs his employees when they confront someone. The other day I heard a cashier call out a woman by name to tell her she needed a mask when she saw her enter without one. The woman said she only needed a few items. Cashier said no exceptions and told her the store had masks available for people who needed them.

I have to drive a lot with my profession so I pass a lot of stores daily. The parking lots are full of people with no masks heading in or out of stores. Sure there are a lot of law abiding people but not nearly enough.
The city saw it's largest increase in cases today since the pandemic began.

Not to make this "racial" but I am SOOOOOO proud of the AA community here in my city. I RARELY see any persons of color without a mask. Makes me very happy.

At least I have not been accosted for wearing a mask. Then again, I'm a large guy and don't give off the vibe of gladly suffering fools.
