A long-lasting, widespread and intense heat wave is set to swallow the nation, arriving right at the historical peak in annual temperatures. While hot weather is expected in the summertime, the magnitude, duration, and intensity of the upcoming heat wave will be impressive.
A wide swath of the Lower 48 will be engulfed by temperatures 10 or more degrees above normal, with a sprawling heat dome likely to park over the nations heartland, lingering for weeks. The combination of heat and stifling humidity could even catapult heat index levels into the triple digits near the coasts.
Models, like the European model, simulate an exceptional heat event leading into next weekend on Saturday, July 18.

(8,445 posts)I have a swamp cooler, and it's been doing a pretty good job, but I did turn the A/C on for about a half hour this afternoon.
What I haven't been liking is that it has been staying hot so late. It's still supposed to be close to 80 at midnight.

(8,445 posts)I leave a crock of water in front of my house, and a big bowl of water in the back, all summer. Today I kept a very slow sprinkler on trees and bushes so that I could help out the birds and water thirsty plants at the same time.

Sometimes I think the birds would rather have water than seed.

(17,931 posts)or so I heard weeks ago. Not quite sure how it survives in the 98 degree environment of a human body. Magic I guess.
My daughter and I were laughing at how the anti-maskers say they can't get enough oxygen and will be poisoned by carbon dioxide. I told her it's a shame that doctors go to all that school, get all that training, at such a great expense, only to drop dead during their first surgery because they poison themselves with carbon dioxide.

Buffalo NY area. We are just finishing a week of daily mid 90's weather with heat index of 100. Rain did not cool anything, just increased humidity levels with the heat.
I only go out in early morning to take out trash or get to a store if necessary. Early morning temps around 80. 95 by noon. 98 by mid afternoon. Every day.
Was supposed to cool off next week. Down to mid 70's and low 80's.

(21,498 posts)and hang out longer in the air conditioned stores to avoid the heat. Stores crank up the a/c, making viral spread a greater risk.
Another good reason besides the heat for staying home.

(54,411 posts)This is supposedly the easternmost tip of the continental USA, and we have had less beach time than normal in our first week. Odd stuff this year has so far been a large number of squid dead on the beach. We found one this morning at the shore still moving, so I picked it up with my water shoe when I saw it was alive, put it back in the water and watched it swim off. There have also been some very large jellyfish of a variety Ive never seen here, and that seems more threatening than a docile bunch of wannabe calamari.

My personal fret is that when we moved to our house a couple of years ago, I so badly wanted to install AC. Hubby stalled me, I waited for a more opportune time, and now I do not want any workmen in the house at all.
Enjoy the tradewinds where you are, Mahina. Aloha no.

(8,445 posts)I just remembered that I took my air cleaner to my son's house, and I'm not going to ask for it back because they may need it for the inevitable bad air quality from the inevitable fires. I'll just get another one for myself.

(90,715 posts)The box says it has HEPA type filtration & that it cleans a room up to 200 sq ft in size.
I got three of them and moved them around the old house, especially kept one in the bedroom. I got them during one of our major regional fires; it was not that close, but kept dumping soot on us, and everyone with asthma was well and truly triggered. I also have several tower-style fans.
Our new house has ceiling fans in several rooms and they help, but they cant do everything.
Best of luck!

(63,221 posts)Ugh! I feel terrible for people who are going to experience the worst of it. Especially if they don't have AC or can't afford to use it.
I absolutely hate the heat and humidity. There is nothing worse than those days when you just get out of the shower and 10 minutes later you are all sweaty again because of the oppressive humidity. My electric bill has doubled over the last month and probably will again this month, but I'm just resigned to sucking it up since I can't bear to be without AC this time of year. And I only have to cool a small space.

(11,949 posts)It rained for 2 hours this morning, which while not unheard of is unusual. Then it got sunny and yeah, it got a little gross. High around 90 and real humid. But we had a nice storm around 5:30pm and it cooled down nicely. Im sitting outside right now. I keep my AC on 76. Used to be 78 but then the wife hit her mid-50s and wanted it cooler! It has not run for 2 hours now.
And this is going to make COVID worse. While many disagree, the evidence I have seen is that being outside in the breeze, sun and Warmth is pretty safe. Being crowded inside is entering the danger zone. Wont be many people outside for the next several weeks. Not in that heat.
Ironically while typing this I just got a Weather Alert. Rain is about to start. And looking at the radar looks like it may be for over an hour.
My power bill is lower in July, when it is raining, than in May which is the end of our dry period.
Yall have a nice weekend and stay safe.
