TX-SD19: Family feuds define Democratic runoffs

But political alliances are as much the product of shared enemies as shared goals, and Gutierrez and Clay-Flores certainly share an adversary: the Rodriguez family, which has been a dominant force on the South Side for more than 30 years.

Gutierrez faces Xochil Peña Rodriguez in next Tuesday’s runoff for Texas Senate District 19.

Clay-Flores hopes to unseat Rodriguez’s uncle, County Commissioner Sergio “Chico” Rodriguez. Meanwhile, Xochil’s father, former Congressman (and current Justice of the Peace) Ciro Rodriguez, has been something of a shadow presence, risking judicial-conduct violations by campaigning for his daughter.

In fact, Gutierrez’s proposed legislation easily could have been called the Rodriguez Act, so blatantly was it targeted at the family that he and Clay-Flores are currently battling.
