President Donald Trump raised the possibility of selling hurricane-devastated Puerto Rico to his Secretary of Homeland Security in late 2017, The New York Times reports. Elaine Duke, a Republican who served as acting head of Homeland Security from July to December 2017, told the Times in an interview, “The president’s initial ideas were more of as a businessman, you know: Can we outsource the electricity? Can we sell the island? You know, or divest of that asset?”

Duke said the idea didn’t come up in a serious way after Trump’s initial proposal. Hurricane Maria ripped through Puerto Rico in September 2017, causing billions of dollars in damages that the island nation is still recovering from.

Trump hates Puerto Rican people. There has long been deep prejudice towards Puerto Ricans living in New York. There are derogatory slurs and all kinds of bigotry directed towards them by other New Yorkers. I haven’t lived in the Tri State area for a long time, but I am sure there are still a lot of people who haven’t changed their views. I think as far as Trump is concerned, that bigotry is baked in.

It makes perfect sense that he would ask if there was away to get rid of Puerto Rico. Maybe he even thought that would cancel their American citizenship and he could then deport them.

Yeah, he is that deranged.

as he looked for a way to get rid of them with the whole island. Very possibly preferred to not really believe they were citizens even though he had to know at some point because most voted against him. After all, many bigots "believe" Hispanic Americans aren't really legitimate citizens.

Can't even imagine what in bizarre, simple pictures the world appears to him.

When an egomaniacal, narcissistic, illiterate, moron occupies the Oval Office. This is shocking, but it should be considering this is the guy who wanted to nuke hurricanes and buy Greenland.

and it's people?

hmmmm...instead of selling a state, I'd just settle for kicking out one particular family out of the US, seize all of their assets, and use some of those seized assets to help rebuild P.R. as we should have done in the beginning after the hurricane. Their last name (a hint) begins w/ a 'T'.

how a country differs from a business.

And people thought it was a good idea to run the country like a business.
