The mother of three livestreamed the incident on Facebook, showing viewers the white woman and a young child positioned behind the bumper of the car.
Police officers arrived on the scene, and the two women gave statements to officers.
Montgomery-Strickland described the incident as "about the craziest thing" she'd ever experienced, pointing to racism as the cause of the encounter.
Online commenters have now dubbed the white woman in the video "Kroger Karen."

(15,820 posts)A kid gets up on a shelf to get an item and this woman gets all upset? Is it her shelf? No. If the kids falls off, is it her fault? No. Definitely not her business or even a matter to this escalation. Just plain weird.

(18,486 posts)We've seen a white woman in similar situations pull a gun on a black woman her car (after she nearly ran her over) - and some people here actually defend it.
We all know that if Montgomery-Strickland had reacted in a similar way, she'd probably be dead now.

(52,253 posts)Unlawful detention usually involves preventing someone from leaving an area at all, not just in their preferred mode of transportation.
There's room for civil action, certainly if the delay caused food to spoil or for them to be late for an appointment.

(37,748 posts)As their vehicle is part and parcel of their own lawful accord, it can be validly argued as unlawful detention.
From that, the aggressor "coerces or exerts influence over the victim with the intent to cause the victim to remain with the actor for an unreasonable period of time under the circumstances"

(52,253 posts)that said, they certainly arrest people for less at times. e.g., for peacefully protesting or even heckling politicians. with the intent of never actually charging them, sometimes.
who called the police? if the aggressor called the police, thinking they had witnessed a crime or child endangerment, and was only trying to detain them long enough for the police to sort it out, it's kinda hard for the police to see that as criminal.
i guess the question was could the police believe the aggressor was merely an idiot or was being malicious in calling the police, assuming she's the one who did so?
if the aggressor didn't call the police, and it's not clear how long she was trying to prevent the other people from leaving, then yeah, it looks more like false imprisonment or unlawful detention.

(22,336 posts)So this woman saw a little boy step on a shelf, and followed the family to their car and refused to let the family leave because she was apparently the CEO or queen of the store or something and was in a position to do something or have an opinion about a kid stepping on a shelf?

(11,316 posts)What was the woman looking for? An apology? What result or resolution is expected? Wouldn't an approach to store personnel be the usual course of action? This another instance of -- not only racism, but just plain ODD.

(999 posts)that other races are not as smart as them, so they feel the freedom to impose their opinions and ideas on people of other races. I get irked seeing how overconfident so many white people are of themselves and their opinions. White people need to learn some humility. Many white people still have the colonial conqueror mindset.
