Japan is 'shocked' and furious at the US after a major coronavirus outbreak at 2 Marine bases in Okinawa — and says the US is not taking the virus seriously

Japanese authorities are demanding answers from the US after a large scale coronavirus outbreak among Marines stationed in the country's southern prefecture of Okinawa.

61 Marines have been infected with the virus in recent days, according to the Guardian newspaper, spread across two bases in the archipelago — which has long been a US military stronghold in the eastern Pacific.

38 of the reported cases are at the Futenma Marine air station. Another 23 occurred at Camp Hansen, a base that is home to around 6,000 US Marines.

"It is extremely regrettable that the infections are rapidly spreading among US personnel when we Okinawans are doing our utmost to contain the infections," Okinawa's governor, Denny Tamaki, said at a press conference, according to the Guardian.

Not surprising. If an officer tried to stop the spread amongst his troops, Trump would fire them. Midnight Writer Jul 2020 #12

As soon as we start acting like a member of humanity we’ll get the respect we earn, not the respect we demand.

We are at the bottom of everything

No one looks up to us
No one wants to be us
No one respects us.

We are a pathetic and broken country.

You would think the top military officials would be on this, but alas, they are not. Even our troops are getting infected. That is a serious national security problem.

URUMA, Okinawa – Marine bases on Okinawa went on lockdown over the weekend in response to “clusters” of coronavirus infections, according to Marine Corps Installations Pacific.

After months with no confirmed cases on the island, “this week the Marine Corps experienced two localized clusters of individuals who tested positive for the virus,” the command announced on its Facebook page Saturday evening.

Personnel at Camp Hansen and Marine Corps Air Station Futenma were placed on “soft shelter-in-place” orders, according to the post. Only essential personnel are allowed to come and go from those facilities while authorities work to mitigate the virus’ spread.

“All personnel who tested positive for COVID-19 are in isolation,” the statement said, using the term for the respiratory disease caused by the virus. Cleaning teams and contact tracers were also put to work.
