I'm going to go camping tonight for 2 days

Last year, I went camping 13 weeks in a row. This year, nothing.

I have some concerns but my campsite is structured in such a way that I drive into the site, set everything up, and I don't come within 50 ft of another human being the entire time I'm there.

I am so excited. One of my favorite things about this campsite is that at night, I can walk the trails on the mountain because I know them like the back of my hand. I feel like a ninja, moving through the total darkness. While also listening to make sure I don't get eaten by anything.

There will probably be some of our resident Holiday Inn Express epidemiologists here trying to shame and scare you out of it but I’d think camping is about as safe as it gets in the right setting. Enjoy!

4. Bears are easy to outsmart and protect yourself from . . .

In Montana, when I hiked there some years ago, there was sage advice posted at the trail head.

The sign warned that both Black Bears and Grizzlies were in the area and advised that the way to safeguard from attack was to wear small bells on your clothing, to alert the bears you were nearby, and to carry pepper spray to use if the bears got too close.

The sign said the best way to determine if there were bears nearby was to look for fresh scat along the trails. Black Bear scat, it said, has small berries and bits of fur mixed in, all part of the bear's diet. Grizzly scat was easier to identify as it's larger, smells like pepper spray, and has little bells sprinkled throughout.

9. Southeast Washington, Kamiak Butte

It's a wildlife sanctuary on a mountain in the middle of a bunch of wheat fields. Because there's no hunting here, and because it's surrounded by wheat fields and predators don't really live much in the fields or on this mountain, there are deer and abundant little critters. Beautiful owls. Charming little chipmunks. There's a big herd of deer that roams around on the mountainside, occasionally steps out and eats some of the wheat, then jump back into the sanctuary.

I just got here and two chipmunks have already said hello.

I live in Tahoe Sierra and my yard is kinda a sanctuary for all things great & small...

At night I sit on the deck and just fall into the stars, sometimes the Great horned Owls come by to converse. I have gotten quite good at hooting lol
They are probably laughing at the silly human but I enjoy it anyway.

11. too damn hot here

to even drive in/pitch a tent/build a fire and take a hike. 93 degrees and feels like 105. We haven't had cool temperatures in what seems like forever and I miss those 2 days in the woods too.
